Pa. House OKs $2.3B transportation bill, including gas tax hike

In case you missed it, gas taxes, registration fees, etc are all going up in PA. And by UP, I meant to say, UP a ****LOAD.

On average gas taxes will increase by $.23 per gallon, which today would put premium over $4 a gallon in PA.

Like it? If you don't like it, it's too late. Gov Corbett pushed hard for the increase, and the state legislature passed it. He'll sign it into law as soon as it hits his desk.

BTW, the legislators get a car and gas as a part of their deal, so guess who it DOESN'T EFFECT?

Sorry about going all P&R, I just think this stinks, and is a regressive tax that hits low wage earners hardest, something that they can not afford.

[edit] I believe but am not sure, that this will make PA the #2 state in the US for gas tax [edit]

Hey you can always relocate next-door to the socialist republic of MD where they've double about every tax, toll, fee etc. In last 4 yrs.... and come up with some good new ones like the "rain tax" = thats rt you are literally taxed on the amt of rain that falls / could fall on any real estate you own.

VA soon to be in same boat thanks to all the out of state $$$ thrown into recent gov. election via dnc machine.

Sad to see a gop governorship seeminy jumping into the same race to the bottom.

Buy your gas in DE When u can.... I fill up every time I'm passing thru and make all pers prop purchases of any significance there

In Pittsburgh, its easy enough to be near either OH or WV every once in a while.

(In WV you can get hard alcohol in the gas stations. I like the sense of freedom.)

The Giant Eagle "Fuel Perks" discounts gas for the groceries you buy. My wife often fills up for dimes per gallon.

I hope these taxes are going right to road construction and maintenance and not to the general fund.

I just got a new tax bill from my township.

It's a "groundwater tax" assessment based on the total SF of my property. My township is 1 Acre minimum for most residential, yet they have a tax rate for 1/4 acre on up. The highest rate tops out at 45,000 SF, just UNDER an acre. Clever little bastards, eh?

I do the giant foods thing as well. took $.70 a gallon off the last time I filled up.

And they're claiming it will all go to infrastructure, and "create" 60,000 jobs over the next ten years.

Yeah, right. Betcha $20 that ten years from now the roads are worse off than today, more bridges are falling down and the "infrastructure" will be no better than we are right now.

I'm sure the governments are just taking this opportunity while gas prices dip to give a new tax so most people won't notice.

    fuelperks!® - Save - Giant Eagle

You can buy, say, Home Depot or Best Buy gift cards at Giant Eagle, and then earn massive points against gas.

The Giant Eagle gas stations, called Get-Gos, are all over the Pittsburgh area, like Sheetz in the middle of the state, or Wawa in the east.

Gasoline is their loss leader to bring in and retain customers at both grocery and convenience locations.

And people LOVE cheap or free gasoline.

They've got a terrific business model.

Giant (Shell) and Safeway (Exxon-Mobile) and others are doing it here in MD as well. I have $.90 waiting on our next fill up. You earn $.10/gal on every $100 you spend in the store. The Giant program allows up to a dollar off per gallon up to 35 gallons. We take both DDs and fill up at the same time.

    Every little bit helps.

The politicians will be flabbergasted when the revenue generated through this tax scheme is less than expected. However, the cost/number of the projects will not be decreased to match this lower revenue, so spending will always exceed the revenue.

As of 22NOV2013 for gasoline purchased in PA via GasWatch.com
Federal excise tax is $0.184/gallon or 18.4 cents/gallon
PA State tax is $0.323/gallon or 32.3 cents/gallon
    TOTAL TAX is $0.507/gallon or 50.7 cents/gallon

Will you really keep the vanity plate for your Ferrari when the cost increases $50/year as a result of this "Transportation" bill (from $26 to $76)? I surely won't and many others will not as well.

Where possible people will change their behaviors to avoid these higher taxes (i.e. carpooling) and the revenue expectations will NEVER be met. Sur-prise, sur- prise....

Government, of either party, has no limits on it's appetite to get into your wallet. Standby in VA, there is an effort to start charging by the mile. There would be more money for roads if government were not doing everything else...free cell phone are the easiest example.
