thanks to plugzit who gave me heads up on Ferrari V-12 engine block for sale on Craigs List. Exactly what I was looking for, I just wanted something for coffee table or wine holder, so broken bell housing doesn't matter.

what can you tell me about this block? on block identified 209 100041.

    from Wiki...

    1966-1968 3967 cc - type 209 - 330 America, 330 GTC

how unique is the 41 identification? did each factory block have a different number? is that the part that would make it numbers matching? which SN do you think this block was on?

here is interesting story the seller included with the block.

That's one cool coffee table. Congrats.

Hope you find out more history.

When did Otto Zipper close? And which corner was it on?

Wondering what building has replaced it as I pass that corner alot in my travels.

Seems like a pretty historic shop.

ha. so the block doesn't have anything unique to match with SN? so how do vintage Ferraris claim numbers matching? or are you saying there are duplicate "numbers matching" blocks for SN 5053? :D

If that was 330 America does that mean my block is most likely from America too or do the GTC's have same 41?

    thanks.

What you have found is the part number for the block. Look on the block near where the bell housing has broken off and see if you see 1) the engine number (4-digit number matching the chassis number); and 2) the internal engine number (probably 6-digits arranged like: XXXX/XX).

From what I can see, both rear mounting legs, and most likely the pad for the serial number has been blown off the block. I have the block from the prototype 4 cam that looks just like the one in the picture. On that car, the explosion took out the passenger side of the firewall in additon to the block.

How many engine mounts does it have?

GTCs have only two because the orientation of the engine is determined by the
rigid torque tube connecting it to the transaxle. Late Series II 330GT's have the same block and the orientation of the engine is fixed by the transmission behind the engine.

330 America and all Series I 339GT's and early series II 330GTs have four engine mounts.

Would both varieties have the same part number?

    Lowell,

I think this is (was) a four mount block.

    Rob,

Does the letter imply that this is the engine used by the girl who got her foot blown off? That story is one of the Ferrari urban legends!

    Regards to both,

    Art S.

I will text him to see, in the letter he doesn't make it clear if this one or not. On the phone he talked about a Ferrari story he wanted to tell me, but don't think he associated it with this block on phone either.

The letter also includes the unrelated Daytona story, so he might just be sharing stories.

A V12 rebuild normally costs and arm and a leg, so she got off rather cheaply with just a foot.

At Sebring in 1957, John Kilborn had a clutch explode on a factory Corvette. He told me he got the car stopped (no brake pedal) and bailed out. He looked down and was able to count 10 toes. He was greatly relieved, but then realized he had not taken his shoes off. They were gone!

I have (I think) the same engine block as this in similar shape.
It has 2 mounts and the same part #209100041 cast into the top, the end of the block is damaged and can't find any engine numbers however the letter "B" is stamped under the mounting pads and on top of each mains cap.
I had hoped to make into an operational coffee table but alas cannot find any (junk) parts for some years to do so.
Will post up some pics, it came from Rutlands and I was told from a damaged car. Anyone know about it?

I was at that 1979 24 hours discussed in the letter as a high schooler. That Daytona was unbelievable -- the car was 7 or 8 years old at the time and it finished 1st in class and 2nd overall, beating several 935's. Between the story behind the black stripe, and the 935's being so insanely fast, it's still difficult to believe they pulled that off. I had pit passes for the race, but was armed with a Kodak 110 Instamatic and a pocket full of flashcubes :(. Those were the good old days when Daytona had huge diversity -- Porsche 914/6's, 240Z's, Triumph GT6, Lancia Stratos, etc. My ears are still recovering from the megaphone exhaust of the RX7's.
