I have a single mirror, door mounted. Works fine, but I must say I love the look of the hood mounted bullet mirrors.

    Tough call.

My coupe has door mounted (but in the photo of the original owner taking delivery in 1962, there is no mirror on it)

My convertible has the bullet type on the hood; indeed, it looks exactly like, including color, the one posted here.

if you look in the original brochure of the series one it shows a flat round lucas mirror on the door with a tall double screw mount on the door . very period , very retro and very correct . I am re spraying my 63 fixed head coupe just now and this is the plan I am taking even though it most likely was sold with out anything. I am doing it for all the reasons above and in the interest of safety of course. Its very minimal , it works and it doesn't spoil the line .Also watch the vid on youtube of jay leno and his white unrestored 63 e type you will see this mirror as well on his. I have seen 4 unrestored left hand drive series ones all with this mirror.

Here's a pic of my '65. although the car was restored 0ver 30 yrs ago everything is still original to the car; including the door mirror in question. those mirrors can be tough to find.

The are still being made new! Sold thru many but Moss motors had them for best price and you can even buy the small disc that says Lucas on it for an extra 13 bucks ! Bought mine last year with that disc extra as the one it comes with is without "Lucas " script. Identical to original shown in my photo right down to flat head screws

Thanks for the input. I decided to go with the Talbot bonnet mounted mirrors. Will post pics when the work is completed.

I am going door mounted on my convertible. For me, I prefer the lines and it matches my coupe.

This is how my 65 E-type is set up with the exact type of mirror. I also have a Ferrari 330 GTC with a fender mounted Talbot and can tell you that I prefer the rearward aspect the door mounted mirror provides much more. The small mirror mounted out on the fender does little to provide a decent view of what's going on behind you and with both these cars, I'm always checking to see what the traffic around me is doing. Plus, the lines of the bonnet will look much better without the mirrors sticking out. Just my 2 cents.

yes I would agree it makes one think that they actually knew what they were doing 50 years ago . I would bet even then if one asked a dealer for a mirror it was born of a need for safety not just asthetics.

I have a colleague that has just completed an exemplary nut & bolt restoration on a stunning RHD 1967 Series 1.5 OTS in Opalescent Silver Blue with grey leather.

The car is having a few miles put on it at the moment - (running in etc) and will be going to the market in the New Year - but if anyone is interested get in touch via PM

This was less about the car than two dueling egos topping each other in $25k increments. Lucky seller.

I looked over the car pretty closely yesterday. It was a typical JCNA champ - over-restored, inauthentic finishes, lots of shine but thankfully no wide whitewalls. Soft vat-dyed modern leather rather than Connelly. Sunglasses as dark as the car's paint will be needed to actually drive the car with those mirror-polished steering wheel spokes.

More charitably, the paint and chrome were first class, over an apparently unrusted shell. A very sound car, but nothing special.

sitting in on the RM auction at Amelia last year the auction is as much about posturing egos as it is about cars . These rich bidders get so into it during the back and forth it appears they have no idea during the frenzy how nuts and how high they are going until the hammer drops LOL.
Max Girardo (the auctioneer at Amelia but not sure about this auction ) is a master at squeezing enthusiasm and cash out of every last wallet . To use Keith Martins words...."well sold!"

Max did his magic again today on this one, successively needling the underbidder for just one more hit. Charlie Ross at Gooding is equally adept although stylistically different; he obtained record prices for both of my Alfas several years ago. Fun to watch.

No doubt the auction setting is driving these prices to world records. That said, I think the e-types are finally getting their proper day in the sun. In terms of styling, performance, race history, historical significance and scarcity the cars have long been undervalued.

The thing that doesn't make sense about this NY sale is that the car could be recreated for ~$250k (don't underestimate the cost of a first rate e-type Restoration). Hard to think that many cars will sell at almost 2x what it takes to build.

Considering comparisons with its contemporaries , I agree.

I purchased my S1 FHC for less than $20K about 8 years ago. A similar condition Corvette coupe was DOUBLE the price.

OP: Looks like Dave Ferguson recently did another 1967 Cotswold Blue / Red OTS!! Revisiting your pictures reminds me how stunning your car is. I hope you've been enjoying it.

That's funny! I had not seen that car - they are twins. Dave said that he tends to have a run on colors. Someone does a car and other customers who are making a color decision see another clients car near completion and that breeds more of the same. I think that silver or grey with red interior was popular in the last 2-3 years.

I am enjoying my car and have no plans to sell it.

Wow! When I saw this e-type in the FJ email, I could have sworn it was the same car. I guess I have a lot more to learn about e-types. Either way, Ferguson does beautiful work.
