At age 66 I decided to buy my first Ferrari. I have owned several Porsche's. I owned the last one for 15 years. I looked at cars in 3 states and spoke with many sellers. In the end I settled on a car in LA. I thought I was doing all the right things. PPI and personel inspection. It's a Ferrari. What could go wrong?

With the company of a life long friend I picked up the car in LA and drove it hard and FAST through Nevada. I shipped it to Maryland from Idaho. The trip was amazing. When the car arrived in Md. to my displeasure I discovered that it needed a clutch and other work.

The sales pitch with my wife took several months. After several months of hearing about my incurable insanity she finally gave up and gave in. When the car needed work immediatly there were several rounds of "I told you so" . Well ?

We spend the winter in Flordia. I wanted to drive the car down. Part of my deal was that I would drive the car. Not a burden as I bought the car to drive and enjoy. I'm 67. My wife said ship the car. No.

We went up to Md and got the car. When we arrived the car had a flat. Not a good start. The first overature was just" leave it here, It won't make it." It wasn't the car's fault. So, we drove it to Flordia. The trip was fun and uneventful. The car ran like a top. My wife now likes the car and has confidence in it. I know I put a lot of miles on it but it was fun. The result was well worth the drive. The cost is the same as shipping. I'll ship it back but I now have the car here and will enjoy driving it. All in all a good deal.

Sounds like your wife and mine share some of the same genes.

To say my wife was not happy when I told her I was buying a Ferrari, is an understatement, she was more liked pissed. I told her I was looking for a Mondial cab, and she told me she probably wouldn't ride much in the car, too windy would mess up her hair.

Then she said, "If your buying a Ferrari I am not waiting for retirement I'm getting the dog I want now." A dog for her, a Ferrari for me, that sounded like a good deal to me, at least she had come around to the idea of the buying the car.

Ended up with a coupe because it was in such good mechanical condition, only had to spend $800 after buying it to fix a couple of things.

For the first month of owning the Ferrari the dog cost more than the PPI and the work to fix things found during the PPI.

At 74 I figure I worked for my money, saved some of what I made, and now had the money to buy the car.

    So everyone is happy.

You should keep a spreadsheet with annual cost of ownership between the dog and the Ferrari! Keeping in mind the resale value of both as well, then show it to your wife after a couple of years! ;)

Very good post, thanks for sharing.

I have just recently enjoyed my first Ferrari purchase. The exuberance I showed through the search and eventual purchase was certainly curtailed by my wife of 26 years opinion. Athough I hope I don't hear the "told you so" it was pretty funny when the topic was first touched on, as her features had a slight frown and she looked intently at me for a few minutes (no joke) and asked "are you having a mid life crisis?".

I look forward to winning her over with my new toy....

My wife was in favor of me getting a Ferrari but now it is her justification for every extravagance that she wants. It doesn't mean that she wouldn't have wanted those items before, now she just thinks that she has justification.

Wow, truly adventurous of you! I am much younger and owned a Spider. I was at my limit on a trip up and down to Monterey from PV - 700 mile round trip. The drive in that thing is plain brutal for that long. Of course, my SS would be MUCH worse.
