Kevin - thorough preparation makes for a successful operation. Great job. Thanks for the detailed dimensions.

Engine out trajectory requires quite a steep tilt, don't you think? I assume there was no difficulty lifting the half-shafts up and towards the rear to clear the engine mounts.

Here is the final stage. The engine lift. The exciting bit, but as Jim says, its all the preparation before hand that counts.

Many thanks to all of you who have provided advise and ancouragement. FC.com was the most valuable and pretty much only source of information for this procedure.

I will continue with this thread for the re-instalation but it will be after several months. Will now return to thread on "valve shims and cam wear".

Kevin - bend two wire hangers and create loops for each half-shaft. Hang them from a chassis member and then you can roll the car without difficulty.

Your straps are a bit long. Upon reinstallation, shorter straps will allow more lift height.

Jim I was using long nylon ties to hold the shafts up, I guess thats similar.
Yes I agree the straps should have been shorter. These are 1m long. Unfortunately I bought 2tonne rated straps, they were too inflexible to tie a knot in to shorten them. Probably should buy some shorter ones for the re-installation.

Some of you may remember this and related threads. A routine service back in Nov. 08 to check the valve shims showed inadequate clearance for suitable shim thickness. Consequence was some wear on the edges of the cam and solution required removal of the heads. The only sensible way to do that was to remove the engine.
It is now 4 months on and the engine is finally back in. Of course there was plenty of diagression to satisfy the curiosity of "....while I have the engine out I can......".
I have plently of photos and notes so will start to submit the useful bits over then next few weeks. The engine has not been fired up yet, and hope to have alive report for the event in a week or two time. The sun is beckoning and it time to get back on the road.

The engine fired up on Saturday. Pleased to report no drama and have already covered 20 miles of testing. I will post threads as I put the slides together. They won't necessarily be in chronological order, but bundled into subject matter.

If you look back through this thread, you will note that I messed up when disconnecting the gear change shaft in order to remove the engine. Consequently the gear linkage and levers inside the gear box needed to be reset. It is a simple thing to do (indeed Jim S. described it as a no-brainer) with the inspection plate off, just takes time to clean the gasket area. It may even be possible to do just by feel and not removing the cover. If someone has done it this way successfully then please let all know as it may bring quick relief to other sufferers. In the end I removed the plate after I had re-installed the engine in the car. I could not find an easy way to tip the engine over safely while it was out. The engine chassis provides ideal support and access for the inspection plate. I am fortunate to have an inspection pit to make this process easier. If you are on your back under the car, it would be more uncomfortable, but certainly doable.

Having removed the engine mounts thinking they were all the same ..I now read that they were not...and the manual is wrong !..can somebody pls tell me how they should be put back...

secondly ,Im looking at Electronic Ign systems and note the one recommended in UK is really expensive ( almost $ 1900 with VAT )

can anybody recommend an alternative with a bit more economy..

    Thanks
