Seems to be the trend with all new cars? Taller belt-line(slab sided look), combined with squashed smaller greenhouse and small side windows... combined with a front end that looks bulky, like it was borrowed from a SUV.

Trends that I've noticed on the new Jag F type, Cayman, and now the Mustang... all following design cues that first appeared with the redesigned Camaro.

I have been noticing the same thing, and I HATE it. Especially the tall, squared off front nose. It is everywhere, from Camrys, BMW, Benz, Caddy, Lexus, Aston, Maserati, etc etc. Some designs hide it better than others, but the proportions are still there. I believe a lot (if not all) of it has to do with the stupid new pedestrian impact safety laws. There has to be a certain amount of clearance between the hood and any hard parts underneath, like the engine. I assume this is why modern mid-engine cars don't have the same stupid high-nose design.

Notice the difference in the height of the fender and nose relative to the top of the front wheels:

I really hope that's not it... Looks like a 370Z with a flat nose.

Good point, but I wonder how the new Vette keeps its sloped nose, and still meets the new laws?

Another photo leaked this time its Time Magazine.... first batch of pics was from autoweek. Big launch by Ford is tomorrow?

Curious why the new pedestrian impact safety laws are considered "stupid"?

Hell, I would've never guessed that pedestrian impact safety laws would play such a major factor in changing the way cars look. Kind of a surprise after 35 years in the sports car hobby (where a big part of the fun was watching how unique, and beautiful these cars could became). Its a shame that safety-proofing the world comes at a high artistic cost to the freedom of designers (unless you like SUV size grills on sports cars?)

No front bumper that cleans up the front. I cannot see the rear but it also looks like no bumper. It looks more modern and less chunky than the current model.

In my opinion performance of the car including handling will count alot.

    Best

This is supposed to be the earth shattering improvement? It has no "flow". It looks like an Angry Taurus.

Yeah, and something to celebrate during the Mustang's 50th anniversary year?

The front looks ok. And the 3/4 from the front isn't bad. But that side profile is hideous. I never cared for the two latest Z cars, the G coupes look much better. Oh well...

Hard to say until seen in person, but typical of Ford, is the same chassis underneath since 2005, and so the stylists can only do so much based on that constraint
...it does look awfully more like the Camaro though!?!

IRS is the big deal with this car. (Laughing to myself that a performance car would still have a solid rear axle in 2013). It is also several hundred pounds lighter than a Camaro. I am in the market for a modern muscle car and am excited by this new Mustang and its upgrades.

^And optional turbocharged 4 cylinder that supposedly puts out as much as the base V6 (no longer the lethargic slouch it used to be).

I think it's very interesting watching the car designers "age" these retro-styled cars. This new Mustang looks a lot better than the mid-cycle facelifted camaro that got a pudgier face and an uglier rental-car looking back.

Ford has wanted to go to IRS for quite a while. They tested the waters with the 03-04 Cobra, but sadly much of the Mustang customer base cares only for drag racing. Setting up a live axle for reliable straight line speed is much easier and cheaper than IRS. Enough of the base squawked and they conceded. Hopefully they stick to their guns this time.

I would predict Ford will offer in its 2015 racing parts catalog a solid rear axle setup/kit at a reasonable price for the drag racing crowd.
