Maser owners/experts - I am in the process of selling/trading my 1988 TR and plan to get a 2009 Granturismo. I definitely want the 4.7 so must be an "S".

I have four questions I am hoping to get some input on:

    1) Other than (obviously) the difference in transmission and lack of an actual shifter in the ones with the MC-Shift, are there any other differences? Exhaust, brakes etc.?

    2) Other than the faster shift times, do the MC-Shift models provide any other significant benefits over the "normal" S model?

    3) Are there any significant pros or cons to either?

    4) Are there any significant differences (good or bad) between a 2009 "S" and a 2010 since all 2010's had the 4.7? (correct me if I am wrong)

All input is appreciated - Many thanks :)

I have a 2010 with the 4.2. I don't know for sure when they stopped offering it with the 4.2.

Not sure how to best answer your questions...but I will say I have a 2012 GT-S and absolutely love the car. The 4.7 has more than enough power, the transmission is superb, the exhaust sound in sport-mode with paddle-shifting is beyond amazing (and truthfully better sounding that any Ferrari/exotic I have ever heard including my 550 Maranello with Tubi exhaust); the car is super reliable....no complaints whatsoever.

In auto with sport off it is a gentleman's GT car, in sport-mode with paddle-shifitng it is an exhilirating italian exotic screaming through the canyons. :)

Thanks for the feedback thus far everyone - most appreciated :)

I guess what I am really driving at is what am I gaining and losing for the $20K +/- premium of an MC-Shift -equipped 2009 GT-S versus a normal 2009 GT-S?

In the normal one you can still go into Sport mode which opens up the exhaust - Correct?
In the normal one when you go into Sport mode you shift via paddles - Correct?

So really the only gain is the faster shift times when the criteria is reached for MC-Shift mode (positive from a performance standpoint) yet you lose the ability to just run in auto mode (potentially a negative given traffic issues etc.)

Obviously the exclusivity of a single year and only 300 produced is a positive but trying to see if it is justifiable for a daily driver.

    Thanks all - Cheers :)

My wife's 2009 GTS has the Ferrari 599 Super fast F1 transmission - you're right there are only 300 of them - we love it - definitely superior shifts and feel - do you need it - no - is it cool, definitely

You can run the F1 599 trans in manual or auto - that is not affected by the mode - the sport mode just opens up the exhaust

I looked on my lap top but could not find any pictures of the dash of my wife's Mas and I am in Florida and the car is North Carolina so I can't look at it but I think all the buttons on both the F1 and non F1 on the dash are identical - with the F1 you just don't have the gear shift knob in the center console - which is kind of nice not to have it in the way

One last point - the 2009 F1 is not any MC whatever it is just a real 599 F1 transmission

The 2009 GTS F1 "Cambiocorso" is an amazing car for the money. The 599 transmission shifts and feels just like a manual, you can hear the clicking as you shift.

That said you should drive one before you buy it, i am not sure i would want to drive this car as a daily driver, plus when the clutch goes bad its a bid of an ordeal, something you wont have to deal with with a normal hydraulic auto transmission.

Mine is lowered, with wheel spacers, novitec front lip, and a few of the loud chrome bling bits removed.

    Love the car.

I was recently shopping for a Maserati coupe. My dealer had one of the rare F1 cars in stock. I asked about it, and they told me to not even consider it. The sales guy said it's too maintenance intensive to even consider as a DD.

too maintenance intensive from the guy that owns a 355 really means something!!

    :)

If you are worried about replacing clutches, you shouldnt buy the F1.

That dealer doesn't know what he's talking about. All of this talk about the F1 GTS's being maintenance intensive, etc. is bull, usually from people that don't own one (such as this dealer apparently).

There are a lot of Ferrari 599's out there which uses the same exact transmission with software adjustments to deal with the different engines, in fact many more 599's than there are 2009 GTS with F1. If the tranny was such a bad piece, you think you would hear a lot of complaints from the 599 guys.

I have never heard of problems with the F1 on the Mas - my wife has 10,000 plus miles on hers and not a bit of a problem - when it was new we tracked it hard for 2 weekends too - had to replace tires, rotors, and pads but never a problem with the F1

Its not that there are problems with the F1 system at all. That said, it wont be as maintenance free as a hydraulic unit, and you should plan on a clutch job every 30k- 40k miles, probably about $10k.

The 599 is a poor comparison - how many of those get driven 10K miles/year and now have more than 50K miles total? Any? If there are any, how many clutches or hydraulic pumps were replaced and at what cost? The answers to those questions will dictate the choice between transmissions. Best.

Hey everyone - Thanks much for the information and feedback. I, too (like a couple others on here) also own my beloved 355 GTS which is one reason I am considering selling/trading the TR. While it is an amazing feeling to own 2 Ferrari's - and my dream Ferrari's at that - I simply don't have the same passion for the TR as I do the 355 and and such it sits a lot which I personally think is unfair to the car and depriving some TR fanatic out there from owning it and loving it like I love the 355.

Now that 4.7-equipped Granturismos are in a range where they are affordable, I think a better combination would be the 355 and a Granturismo. Based on the feedback on here I think I will look for a "normal" one versus the rare F1s.

Thanks again for the feedback - when I find one and obtain it I will be back and posing pics.

    Cheers :)

I have an 09 GTS with the F1 transmission and I daily drive the car albeit not far. I bought the 5 year warranty from Maserati which expires in 2015 thinking it would be useful. The car has been bulletproof so far, a real pleasure and the F1 is a different car than the standard version. One of the things I didn't see mentioned was that the F1 has an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution as the Ferrari transaxle is in the rear unlike the auto box which is bolted on the back of the engine.
From time to time I consider selling it but I just don't know what I'd replace it with.
