    Now I know that this is not a Porsche forum and I the reason why I have posted this here is based on the fact that I value your opinion and taste when it comes to fine automobiles;

    I have the choice to buy one of the following vehicles for the same price. Both very different and both have the potential to increase in value;

This First car is a 1973 911 2.4s Targa. Australian delivered, 1 of 6 to be delivered in the country in Targa. The car comes with a huge history file and was in good order, some things needed tidying up, however nothing was drastically wrong with the car.

The Second car is a 1996 993 Turbo. Australian Delivered, in excellent condition with 107,000kms.

    I have owned two 1969 911S and a 1973 1973 911S, and I have owned a 1997 993tt.

Cleary the early 911s is a vintage car. Its fun (especially when it comes on cam) but not especially so, incredibly easy to drive and reliable. I think ease of use is why they are so popular (Outlaws are a different story...). With that said, its MFI and doesn't have the vintage intake sound of a carbureted car. A Dino is much more fun to drive...but a very different experience so the cars will be a nice compliment

The 993tt is the last "vintage" 911. its basically a 1980s 911 with a crazy fast engine and four wheel drive. The electronic nannies are fairly rudimentary and don't kick in until you are having a bit too much fun.

Looking at your garage I would say pass on the 993tt. You already have crazy fast cars - you don't need another. the 993tt is like a crazy fast vintage car (so its "scary") so there is some consideration to that, but I have a tendency to lean towards vintage over modern.

Its funny how we all consider upside when buying these. If these cars are the same price you should absolutely buy the '73. the valuable 993tt are low mileage cars - and your car isn't low mileage. And if it was, you couldn't drive it or you'd destroy the value. to be honest, it would be hard to find a 993tt that was equal in value to a '73S. you'd be looking at a sub-20,000 mile car that was likely a 911 Turbo S. And a '73S should still be worth more.

That '73S doesn't have the correct seats. make sure its matching numbers (engine and transmission). Order a CoA. and if its not the original color knock US$20,000 off the price. If the turbo has been modified in ANY way you need to be cautious as well. lowering them is really the only acceptable modification with collectors.

driven both briefly so its a question of first impressions. The turbo always looked ungainly and all about brute force with little or no sophistication. we know about German engineering, but its not what you've got its how you apply it, The turbo to me was a pig.
The 73, awesome! faster that my 73 Dino by far. but still boring to look and, when I parked the Dino next to it, it looked like a an ox cart. now its just an old familiar shape, that I look at fondly but no more.

That was not the question of the poll.

    Personally, I am extremely biased towards a '72 'S' :)

have you ever owned a targa? I was told to get targa ownership out of my system as you will only own 1. well, my 74 S was it for me and I now fully understand by "you will only own 1"

find a 73 coupe. you will not be sorry!!

The 993t is a car you will love.
Had it for 6 years when it was new on the market.
Compared to whatever else was available back then, the car was a spaceship.
Do you intend to drive it, or just keep it until it has more resale value?
You will absolutely love the way it handles and enjoy it's character.
In "fun factor" criteria a comparison to the 2.4 is what an MX5 is to a Honda S2000
In resale value etc, I think there will be a bigger demand for the 993 in the future.
After all its the "last of its kind"

On the other hand, the 2.4 looks stunning and would hit it if I wanted a "classic" porsche.
But I really like to "drive" them and the 2.4 is just to weak and -old school- for my taste.

    Voted 993.
But would prefer a Dino if it was a poll option.

    No, never.

Early 911 Targas are fantastic and fun cars to own. I had a '71 911E Targa in Conda Green with black sport seat interior. One of my all time favorite Porsches I've had. The one I am sad I sold! All the positives that people like in a Dino GTS is in the Targa. In the Porsche world, the coupe is more valuable and sought after(except a '67S Soft Window Targa) but Targas in the right combo have their loyal followers. Porsche is coming back with a true Targa for the 991. This will bring new focus and appeal to vintage models.

On the 993 Turbo, to be an investment grade future collectible, needs to be über low mileage, perfect, no stories, not modified, all records examples in great color combos.

My advice is don't buy purely for investment. Buy what connects with your heart while at the same time is a smart investment. I bought my '56 Speedster in '99 in rough but matching numbers original condition from a couple in Northern California for less than the 993 they bought with the money. I bought it with my heart because I loved Speedsters. I still have it today. It still connects with my heart!

If you buy a Targa, factory color combinations and specs are really emotional and dictate price and demand. Unlike Dinos, Porsche collectors demand original Kardex combinations on investment grade early 911's. On 356's they're a bit less black and white. Go figure!?

I'd go for the '73. The 993 is a fantastic car, but an early 911 is brilliant. We have a '72 2.4 alongside a '70 246gt, and they really, really compliment each other. Go for it:).

While I love vintage cars the Targas do nothing for me in the looks department.

I think because there are so many Targas id wager that these two cars will be comparable resales in 10 years.

I voted 993 just because it's a great combo and a little because I have a 993 tts in the garage. Fun cars tho my 5000 mile car has seen a lot less road time than that black example.

    Either way you'll have fun.

It has to be the 2.4 S. However I'd prefer a 72 E over the S and a sunroof car over a Targa. Better lines and more tractable motor . You can buy the best 2.4E in the country for the price of an average S

The earlier car is also a very stylish garage companion for your Dino. I've owned a 993 Targa and currently have a 72 E. The latter will give you more opportunities to drive it like classic rally's - i just completed my third Melbourne Mille around Tasmania last month. 1,000 miles of bliss in some old tin with not a single issue

I agree with the low KMs on the 993. they can be super rare, but you never get to drive them.....

The seats in the 73s looked odd to me, however I have been assured that they are original and I have also found some additional pics of these cars with the same seats, so it may have been an option.....

    Beautiful car Alberto.

I really like the bright colours too.

How do you find the targa over a Coupe?

I have always preferred the coupe, hence why I am still pondering.....

My Wife was suitably impressed with the Targa and enjoyed the roof off test drive too. This can always help....

I have to be honest, I have never really lusted after a targa which is a bit of a problem in this decision.

I agree the 993 TT is an absolute animal and miles ahead of the comp in it's day.

Thanks Freeman, you make a very interesting point about the new model in Targa coming out. this will for sure add some spice to the older Targas that's for sure.
