I'd like to yank the transmission out without drop it the whole engine if I can. My propellor shaft is broken and I'd like to swap it out and make sure everything works before I go into my 30k service if that makes sense. I want to do my compression and leak down tests before indrop the motor.
I can't do that with thT shaft broken.

If I have to drop it so be it but if someone has a how to or at least some photos of it that would help me out. The Shop book doesn't get to in depth on it.

    Thanks JP

Also I might just do it and come up with a how to anyway.

Yep-just do it. Take off the bumper and muffler, then unbolt stuff til it falls out (or, really, you pull it out.)

It s pretty straight forword but as the WSM says you do have to take out the sway bar. I just removed mine two weeks ago but of course no pictures from memory here goes.

    Pull off tires
    Bumper
    Muffler
    Air boxes
    Maf
Unplug wires from on top of GB
    Boots and shaft connectors
    Both under GB cross members
Disconnect parki.ng brake and cable from under GB
    Unplug speed sensor

    Cats
    F1 unplug clutch
    Unplug clutch sensor

Remove actuator or shift linkage on manual
Two oil lines from drivers side to lowere cover on gear box(GB)
    Remove clutch
    Remover sway bar
Undo all bolts on GB to engine
    Place jack underneath GB
    Remove motor mounts off GB

Slid GB back and up until everything clears

It is a pain in th ass to get it out keep wiggling

Easy way I found to get it back in was call Fast Cars lol

I have many pictures of the 355 drive-train in various states of stripping. if you cant find what you want on your thread and need anything specific please pm me and i will email you them.
However i will just give you one scenario i came across a few years ago when i removed a 355 gearbox from an engine. As i was pulling the gearbox away from the engine, the center shaft was left in the back of the engine/crank hole as i pulled rearwards. when i noticed this i pulled the shaft rearwards back into the gearbox by hand. This shaft can be easily slid from the gearbox with very little effort. So be sure its slides from the rear of the crank with the gearbox together. (i am posting a picture of the shaft in one of my gearboxes for reference )
This has only happened once to me and never again since, but i just thought i would tell you. Forewarned and all that :)

I believe this is the shaft that is broke on his so you will have to pull it out from both directions.

Yep thats the shaft. The trans has to be removed in order to swap it out.

    Mine broke at the Flywheel.

Once the gear boxs is removed, the shaft is just slid out. Of course in your case as said, from both sides.
The gearbox and shaft removal is not hard at all. The hard bit is sourcing and buying the new shaft. Good luck.

Get your new shaft cryogenically treated, and then send it off to WPC in California to have them do their treatment to it (a type of micro-"shotpeening").

I found getting it in and out to be a bit of a struggle.
in the end I took the studs out which made it an awful lot easier.

I agree with mad dog a bit of a struggle to get it out. if you loosened the motor mounts at the front it allows the engine to go up slightly giving more clearance to get the GB out this helped me a lot even so I had maybe a mm to spare.

    Got started tonight.

What a pain in the butt working in freezing ass temps. My heater at least made the barn manageable but I wish I had heated concrete! I believe my next house will have it if I stay north.

Anyhow here's where I stopped tonight, I'll have that trans out tomorrow.

Don't forget to pull the shaft out a little to clear the engine.

That's gonna be the "fun" part because it snapped off where you would normally grab it to pull the prop shaft out.

Just used a magnet to pull it out, tied it off with a zip tie so it wouldn't move.

Well got it Dropped pretty easy really.

After I pulled the exhaust, bumper and clutch I started on the CV Joints. Got them done also removed the heat shielding because nothing was holding them anymore.
Then turned to the clamps on top of the trans that hold the wiring harness to the trans two nuts and one bolt all 10MM with washers.
Once I got those removed I moved to the lower cross beams and removed them from the engine cradle. 19mm nuts and allen keyed bolt can't recall what size I used.
Removed the Bolt and nut on the shifter linkage 13MM and I initially shifted it into4th gear to bring it fwd so Id have more access to it. After pulling the hardward I pushed to shaft back into the transmission to move it out of the way.

I removed the two bolts and nuts that hold the trans mounts to the cradle.

I then jacked up the trans and supported the engine with a jack stand, it was slightly higher than when the transmission is when mounted so Id have some wiggle room. I did not loosen the engine mounts. I only brought it up enough that the aft mounts on the transmission moved up about half and inch.

I removed the 6 nuts and 2 bolts that hold the trans to the engine all 17MM.

I then took my jack and jacked the transmission until I got the weight off of it and wiggled it until I got it to separated from the motor, then I gently used a small flat tipped screw driver to pry it a little further away from the engine.
Unplug the speed sensor, weather pack plug
I took off the trans mounts from the transmission 17MM and then dropped the transmission straight down and out of the way.

Once I got that far I then pulled on it by hand towards the back of the car until It cleared the mounting bolts all this time the trans is resting on my jack so that it is supporting it.

I took off the trans mounts and then dropped the transmission straight down and out of the way.

I did not need to take out the sway bar. when dropping it I only had to move the CV joints slightly to get enough room to clear them so I didn't remove them all the way.

It looks like your rear frame where the transmission mounts are braced different than mine. My triangular braces seem like they cover the engine and transmission mounts more. I will have a better look when I'm back at my car.

    I guess it's possible my car is a 95.

Well installed the new propeller shaft, reinstalled trans, hooked up the cooler lines, cv joints, frame braces, shifter linkage and that's as far as I got tonight.

Wish the go pro was charged I would have recorded the removal. But it wasn't and I didn't want to wait for it.

I need to find my parts that I ordered from Ricambi and get my triple seals from that stash.

Hopefully I can start it tomorrow.

Got it all done first start since I had it delivered in the spring.
Just some proof of starting and moving it I'm so happy. But it's snowing so I can't drive it.
