Person 1 – I love my Ferrari. I keep my car clean and I don’t abuse it. When this car leaves my hands (as all cars do) it will be in as good, or better shape than when I received it. It is important to me to keep the mileage low to retain its value.

Person 10 – I love my Ferrari. I drive it a lot. When this car leaves my hands (as all cars do) it will have been well used. Retaining the value of the vehicle is not as important as driving it hard.

On some days I look at my Dino and think about all the good reasons to keep it original and preserving it for the future, but other days I think why should I save 100,000 miles for the next lucky guy.

    I guess I am an 8 :)

Why save it for a stranger. Besides the next guy will probably really enjoy a restoration project. Drive it, enjoy it, you can't take it with you (unless you are Sandra West)

I'm unsure where to place myself, but I don't necessarily equate driving hard to abuse - these cars were designed to be driven hard, so there's really no abuse as long as maintenance and care are employed.

While I just recently purchased my 1985 308 QV which has 43K miles, mileage was not really a consideration for me... getting a top notch car (cosmetically and mechanically) in really healthy condition which could be driven as intended (hard!) was the only consideration for me - and I gladly paid more for it.

So I say enjoy it, drive it hard (as Enzo would) and ensure it's well taken care of in all aspects! My goal: get my car to 100K miles as soon as possible, while keeping up the maintenance and cosmetics.

    Cheers!

    Ruben

Exactly. Part of keeping the car healthy is to use it. Eventually mileage becomes academic and condition all that matters.

Drive it and keep it maintained. Both are therapy for me. I would say I'm a 9.

    I'm same but, since my 328 isn't original enough, I rate a 5.

I am on the verge of restoring my car, my first choice a Newman style makeover.
Regardless of what level I choose (and can afford), I will enjoy her as a daily driver (excepting snow, though that was fun years ago) and restore her again, should she wear out before I do.

I'm an 8 or 9. I drive her weekly until there's salt on the road (draw back of living in MI). Despite the winter, I put about 3,000 miles per year on her. The more I drive her, the better she seems to drive. I also have no problem taking her to the red line frequently, but ALWAYS warm her up slowly. She has 43k miles on her and runs great!

I hate to sound like an old foggy but this idea of saving your car is a pretty modern invention.

Back in the ol' days (like the 80's!) driving the crap out your car, driving from across the US to Monterey and ending up parking it on the street (the horror!) overnight, using it as a daily driver (my Dino was the only car I had for 18 months) was not that unheard of. The 308 was sold as one of the first Ferrari daily drivers for Dr's and Lawyers to take to work if not everyday, most days.

I don't know when this modern idea of not driving your car started but I suspect it was in the Auction market.

    Here is the difference.

Who in the hell wants to be stuck in a 308 across the country nowadays!

Back in the 80s that was best out there , unless you want to be in the "bandits" trans am across country - both crappy by today's standard.

Therefore,it's not a matter of saving them, it's about enjoying them when they operate the best, and that usually means when it's not 100 degrees, raining, or snowing ;)

The difference was people could afford them. Up through the TR period in the dealer I had never even heard of one not being paid for in cash. Then they became commodities and quit being cars. We had quite a few customers using them as daily drivers. I had a Doctor client for years, when he came in for service we got him a rental. The Ferrari was his only car. Took it on a lot of ski trips.

Words of wisdom. I love driving my car, and I love working on my car, but I don't love the object itself. The only way it's leaving my hands is when either the car or myself are dead, and in that case mileage and "value" aren't going to matter much. I just treat it like I do all my belongings--with respect and care. I do that in order to prolong my enjoyment of it, not to maintain value.

the cars are old and loved that is why they are not daily drivers anymore but weekend cruisers, fun to pull out on a weekend afternoon or to drive somewhere far once in a while - puts a smile on our faces, taking care of them is important, keep a hand on something we love ! having them as garage furniture is just sad..

What's the "I don't plan on selling, and I don't give a darn what you think of my dirty car" setting?

What I -do- need to do is get Vintage Air on the job and yank out that crappy Italian "climate control" system.

Interesting responses but I guess I was expecting more quantitative data. Perhaps if I word it differently and simplify the question: Rate yourself where a “1” is a guy more interested in preserving his/her car. A “10” is more interested in consuming his/her car. It is not binary as we are all probably somewhere in the middle. So far we have one 5, two 8s, two 9s and one 10+. I urge those who responded without reporting a number to buck up and make a call 1-10.

I'd say I'm a solid 6. I like keeping my car in good shape, well serviced and largely original but I also love driving it, and I do so year round and with an almost ridiculous disregard to the weather. To date, I have driven my current car in rain, snow, salt, and (three months after I bought it) a hurricane.
