Guys, I know this is Fchat and will be biased a lot towards the Ferrari but like to get some of your opinions/views. I have never owned a Ferrari and have an itch for one right now. I love the 360 but it is out of my reach right now. I would be giving up the car below. Is it worth it? I am looking at a 1996 Yellow Coupe (a little higher mileage but clean) The car I have some very unique parts on the car. Plus the APS Twin Turbo I have sitting in the room will make around 800hp safely and plan on putting it on the car in Feb. I have around 100k in it. It's definitely different and nicer and faster than all the other Corvettes in your neighborhood. Hmmmm..... 10 years from now, it'll be a howevermany-year-old Corvette. Still special? Okay, kinda catty of me to put it like that, but you asked.
I understand your point of view. But, not a fan of the 308/328s. I had someone offer me a Lamoborghini Jalpa and I turned it down..200hp might bore me. But, I get what your saying. This has a LPE body kit though which a lot of people know means a lot of power no matter what year.
I've only experienced stock C6's, both a z51 and z06 and there's no way I'd trade my 355 for one. I'm not sure what you're after, but a 355 has a very different feel than a c6 vette. It's about as fast as a c6 z51 on track, slower than a z06 but the main difference to the z06 is the brakes (imo). Yeah, the acceleration is more in the z06, but it's a different power delivery and honestly the 355 is a little more exciting when revving it out to 8500rpm than the flatter power delivery of the vette. The brakes on a z06 are phenomenal, though, and they're lacking (for track use at least) in the 355. As to your car, I honestly don't know what you'd do with it other than go very fast in a straight line and the 355 excels at pretty much everything else besides that. Sure, it's fairly quick, but compared to a 600-700hp car it will feel dog slow in a straight line. It has better feel in the controls and seat of the pants, but it's hard to describe. It's more connected feeling than the vettes, where it feels like there's something in between you and the car in the c6's I've been in, or that they're a little bit 'wooden,' the 355 feels like you're connected directly to it. Hard to describe. You get less for your dollar performance wise with the 355, a lot less. But, it makes it up in intangibles. Honestly though, if you have a TT vette, I kind of doubt the intangibles are very important to you as it's a huge difference from a brute force TT american v8 to a high strung Italian. Unless you're now ready for something completely different, but a 550 may be a better entry to the Ferrari world and less of a complete world change than a 355. Maybe you're after that, in which case the 355 is excellent. Ferrari really delivered a high strung race car for the street, which is both the main draw and the cause of so many issues with the 355. High strung Italians, especially as high strung as the 355, demand attention and can be expensive if neglected.
Thank you for the guys that took time to give me honest opinions. Also good reading about 355. My sons first Christmas and hot him a Ferrari.
It all boils down to what you want to have for a driving experience. If your looking for torque that could turn the earth and g-force that will tear your face off and melt the plastic off the kids turbo'ed Civics in the intersections, an older F-car isn't the best choice under $100K. But if your looking for class, pedigree and that tingly feeling every time you shift gears not to say the pride of ownership you get when people give you thumbs up on the highway and girls skirts falling off at the street lights.. then Ferrari all the way!
+1 to what Joshua said. I see C5s and C6s everywhere (tons in my work parking lot) but I never see people losing their ****, taking videos, etc. of those cars at every stoplight like they do with mine. Vettes are common (sorry, just a fact). Ferraris are exotic. C7s are getting attention now because they are rare and new. In a couple of years they will be common as well. My 15+ yo Ferrari is still treated like a major life event when people see it.
Truth. The Ferrari is never treated as "common". It's certainly not the fastest car, not the most expensive car, or the best appointed. It does however always get treated as if it is something beautiful and special. Mark
The reality is Ferrari is special or exotic. I had a 95 vette, nice car but not even close to a Ferrari. I bought it for $22k with 20k miles and it was a very nice car for the cost. I had it nearly 10 years and probably had 10 or less compliments. I've had my 355 for 11 months (one season) and I've got around 50 compliments, people taking photos, people following me to video the car. I own one of 2 355's (that I know of) in all of western NY so the car is special and exotic. Vette's are a dime a dozen. The 355 has looks that kill, sound to die for, class beyond the finest wine and all and all the best total package one could ever want. I often sit and admire my car, it's an obsession like none I've ever experienced. While my vette was nice, I never once in nearly 10 years sat and admired it.
Really nice vette! TT v8 rocket is something I would hold onto with that need for HP. Engines with lower compression ratio/larger turbos are a blast as well waiting for the booster rocket to spool up. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I agree with what all had said. Side note, my Lingenfelter body is only 1 of 14 ever produced. So my car look is rarer and I can't take the car out without people asking and taking pics. I believe it was in a video game which gets more attention.
Back in the early 90's, I built 2 dragster chassis for Lingenfelter so I know they do killer stuff. You car is really nice and I'm sure no one would ever deny that but Ferrari is just something special.
I would have to agree with what everyone else is saying...I have owned a few vetts, a Maserati, a mercedes cls550 amg (my dd) and by far I love my Ferrari it's true I have never owned another car that I love so much and get this much attention to drive. They are a blast and like nothing else I have ever owned. I can't say enough about my 355... Buy one you won't be sorry. P.S. Don't let all the stories scare you they are great cars, just maintain it and it will be a great car for you.
Meant to say it gets a ton of attention every time I take it out, people nearly crash trying to film it when I am driving down the road. I think that's pretty cool. Also i can't leave out how awesome it sounds....nothing like it
Your gonna miss the power. Yes the Ferrari is nice, but you will feel like you could get out and walk faster after owning that beast. I can't help but feel you will be disappointed. When you gotta rev a bag outa the thing to beat a pick-up truck ( I got literally destroyed buy a ford f150 lighting on a roll) your gonna wonder what all the hoopla is about. Looking pretty? The Ferrari will always win. In a race..well, be prepared to lose most of the time. It just doesn't have the torque for stop light to stop light drags, and it's not supposed to. On the twisters where the 355 should be, you may have a chance. But once the road straightens out, your dust in the wind. Sure the 355 will do 180, but it takes awhile to get there. By that time the vette is at the next corner, and your a dot in the mirror.
Let me put it this way. You are asking our opinion about buying a Ferrari that was first sold almost two decades ago. Meaning it still excites you. How many people still get excited about a Corvette that first came out in 1995????? Get the 355.
I went from a C6 to a Cayman S to a 348. I haven't missed the power that my 'vette had at all. In fact, I'm so glad I traded it for the Cayman because doing so taught me about a whole host of other things to appreciate in a drive. Also cured me of my leftover boyhood magazine racing problem Speed is fun, but power isn't everything, IMO.
Thanks for the mature discussion. And, I have always been a fan of exotics since Cannonball Run came out...LMAO
I still have my wifes 2010 2SS Camaro that has 500hp NA power. So, if I need a fix I could always drive hers....lol
I have owned Ferraris for many years and have never considered a corvette. your car however is a very, very nice machine. don't trade that car for a 355...you will regret it. if you really like the 355 get one and keep that corvette. the tt corvette will make the 355 seem downright slow by every metric. the c6 is light years ahead of a 355 in chassis dynamics. let's not even go where we will compare your blown V8 to the Ferrari stock lump.
