Somehow there is not much documentation teaching how to import music via the USB.

Is there a special format for storing the music on the flash drive? The reason I ask is that when I try to select "import from USB" on my 458 infotainment screen, it says that there are no files to import on my flash drive! But of course there are files--about 20 albums.

I guess I could just insert the CDs one at a time :(

I think it only recognizes mp3 and not AAC (apple format), if all your songs are from iTunes Store , then none will be shown !

If you are using ITunes, you need to convert songs to AAC. You can do that on ITunes. Save the songs in a file for each singer and it will b easy to find it in the car

I synched the flash drive with Windows Media Player and those files were recognized and imported to my 458!

Also found out that the CD player actually holds 6 CDs!

Thought it only was a single player

Also it is much faster to use the USB to import music. Trying to copy CDs is much slower

good ! you are playing around with the audio system and found the solution ! but as soon as you fill up the HDD, searching for a song feels much slower with increasing number of songs you have in the HDD !

Unfortunately, the hard drive seems to be malfunctioning. I hear a lot of cracks and stutter and distortion when I try to play the music. I have deleted the files and then re-synched and re-imported but to no avail.

Perhaps my hard drive is defective?

Has anyone else had similar issues.

Also the user interface leaves a lot to be desired. The documentation is very poor too. The infotainment in the California by comparison is far superior.

Not only does the player hold 6 CDs, it holds 6 _D_V_D_s !

Fill those up with MP3s - it's a boatload of music.

+1 on the fact that the audio-system sucks in terms of usability, though.

    Now have a great 2014, y'all !

There must be a problem with my unit.

Also the software interface is absolutely aweful.

Trying to play something, store something in your HD is so difficult
    Due to the poor design.

Which company designed this ? Becker?

Glad I ordered the $900 ipod connector. Park my 30 pin Nano in the glove compartment. Certainly not as intuitive as my BMW's Idrive but loading mp3s through the USB input and having to scroll through all the myriad songs with my Cali was a tedious and archaic exercise.

Considering the tune2air solution for bluetooth wireless streaming via the ipod connector.

I think I figured out the problem. Some of my music is ripped with a faster bit rate than 128.
Also there are different kinds of WMA.

MP3 is more easily read since it has a slow bit rate and lower data content.

It would be great to be able to contact the manufacturer in order to get the full documentation. Why Ferrari didn't provide this in the first place is a mystery.

anyone tried using an iPhone 5 with a "converter to iPhone 4" cable that then plugs into the 458's iPhone 4 connector?

If you want to import music via USB use MP3 format or simply insert the CDs.

The system doesn't play back higher resolution formats accurately. Why? It beats me! MP3 is a t least a ten-year old format. Who writes this stuff guys who are 80? This is technology not history!

When you want to play HDD you have to
Press the middle button and select "Search for Music"
Option and then wait for the next screen and select playlists.
When you copy a CD it is stored in playlists rather than Albums. Why? Hmm guess that's because the software engineers don't know what an album is! Lame. Should be store autaticly in playlists and albums. What losers those engineers are!

Also even if you are inserting the first cd, the system is so stupid it doesn't realize this, and asks you if it is the first CD. WTF. And then when you want to eject the only
CD in the system it asks you it
It is the first CD you want to eject. Ah yes you moron, please
Eject the only CD you have in the system.
    What year is this 1974?

I swear software engineers don't deserve
The respect or cash they are paid these days.

Please ask me again what year is it? 1999? Really how stupid are
    You guys.

Just to make sure: Does this roughly translate to "I like software engineers" ? :D

Maybe they were too occupied with their d*mn sociopathic smartphones running Facebook, Twitter, wtf-app, rather than doing their work...

But correct, the usability of the media-system sucks.

    Best,
    Ulli

Man.. just imported some MP3 files into the 458 media system Hard drive. That's one confusing interface they have come up with there.

Just wanted to mention, in order to get the car to recognize my USB flash drive, I had to initialize it under Mac OS using just the generic MS-DOS FAT format. When I had it under a more Mac file allocation table, the car wouldn't see it.

That might help someone down the road, so I thought I would mention it.

I may pickup an iPod and see how that works, but I'm not holding my breath! They really need to revamp that menu interface as far as the radio goes.

Is there a way to just import all of my music from my ipod to the HDD while it's docked on the cable? This would eliminate having to always bring my ipod to the car and wait for the stereo system to recognize it, which takes several attempts to work.

I bought an iPod touch and an iPod nano today. I'm going to do some testing and see how it goes. Yesterday, I loaded up songs from the USB flash drive to the HDD, but wasn't really impressed.

My plan currently is to setup playlists on the iMac then put them into the iPod nano. So far that's sounding like it might work well. The iPod will be dedicated to the 458, and only taken out to update playlists between the iPod and iMac.

I'll report back how it goes. If that doesn't work, then I may just stick to the FM radio for a while

Just finished attaching the iPod nano to the car. It works a lot nicer I think. I can build the playlists on my iMac, then just attach the iPod nano and sync it.

After playing around with the controls, I'm also getting a better feeling for how all the menus and stuff work. The biggest help was using the middle button behind the steering wheel to switch between HDD, iPod, FM, AM, etc. That speeds things up a bit.

But with the iPod, once you get into that, then some of the rest of the controls and buttons seem to work a bit more intuitively for the iPod. The other thing I noticed is that the quality of the music (even with just the standards speakers) seems improved when the source is the iPod. I have the treble set to +1, the midrange to +2 and the bass +3, sounds pretty darn nice.

I also bought the iPod touch, but I'm going to return it and keep the iPod nano dedicated to the 458. For one thing, the nano is much smaller and fit into the glove box. For another, the nano is focused mainly around songs, where as the touch is more like an iPhone without cellular service. The touch has a lot of apps and features I don't need, since I mainly just want to have music form my iMac dragged into playlists and then populated into the iPod nano. In speaking with Apple today, they informed me that sync'ing the touch would download just about everything, whereas the nano would only sync up my songs. I also have videos and photos unchecked, which might be helping the nano only sync my playlist. Whatever the case, it works pretty smoothly now.

Basically, the iPod nano functions much like the HDD in the car, but with the benefit of being able to quickly remove it and administer it via the iMac and iTunes.

I'm still a little foggy with regard to how Apple's music subscription service works between the nano vs. the touch; one person at Apple said that might be an issue with the Nano, since it's more geared to play music on the device. Another person, however, said all the iPods basically function the same.

Originally, I was going to try to have it setup where the iPod in the Ferrari would automatically sync up to the iMac anytime I drove home, but I think that might be sort of a hassle. It's just as easy to plug the iPod into the iMac and I think maybe more direct and less potential problems. I think with the iPod touch - since it has WiFI - I could setup my playlists to auto sync to the iPod touch. This would allow me to build my playlists on the iMac and then as soon as I got into the car and turned the power on, it would sync up automatically. I may still look into this, but for now I kinda like the small size of the Nano.

If you can’t transfer your library online, you can load music files from your computer to your mobile device using a USB cable. If your library is not already downloaded to your computer, you'll need to download your music files before transferring music onto your phone.

I just loaded my HDD. It works with MP3 files, as others have noted. You need to be sure the music files are in the root directory of the USB flash drive you use to upload them, with nothing else but music. Then, it's just a matter of selecting HDD, using the "Menu" (middle button) to bring up the management menu, rotate and click on the dial to select "import music", and then connect up the USB flash drive using the cable in the glove box. (If you need to convert file formats, there are a number of downloadable format changing apps; I used Switch Sound file converter and got the paid version ($24.99), because the free version limits the number of file conversions you can do.)

I also have an iPod Touch in the glovebox, connected to the iPod cable. So what I've set up is a playlist/genre on the iPod different from that set to play on the HDD. When I'm in a different mood, all I do is toggle between the two!
