Did my first 355 oil/filter change today. Smooth as silk. The Ricambi kit is fantastic. Just make sure you have a 12mm Allen. Even with a fairly extensive toolkit the largest I had was a 10mm (socket and key) so I had to make a tool run during the process. Finding a 12mm turned out to be a bit harder than expected, but Harbor Freight saved the day after 3 other stores failed.

The only hiccup came when I pulled the filter. What do you guys do to keep about half a quart of oil from pouring from the filter when you loosen it? Twin streams went all over the sides of the gearbox all the way down to the garage floor. Not a big deal to clean up, but I'd like to improve my technique next time so no oil hits the engine at all.

My technique (which is probably despised by many) was to punch a few holes in the filter while the drain plug was open. This allowed much more oil to drain through.

Did you do this with the oil hot? I'm told that's the proper way but also the way to get unavoidable 3rd degree burns ;-)

I always punch a hole in the filter and then slightly crack it loose to allow the filter to drain completely. Don't own a ferrari yet, but worked on my Lotus, etc. so should work here as well! This way no spill on the motor and doesn't cover your hands when spinning it off!

@Dave: Yup. Warmed it up all the way to temp before pulling the plugs/filter.

@Daniel: Sounds like a good solution to me. I'll try it on the next one.

And thanks again for the great kit! I especially like the quality of the gloves. Thicker and less tear-prone than the usual Nitriles I've used. Kept me from using/ruining my Mechanix. ;)

I fit plastic bags under the oil filter assembly before removing the filter. Use the built-in drain of the housing to channel any oil into the bags. Have another bag ready to insert the filter as soon as it is unscrewed. I learned all this the hard way, of course.

I bought the oil filter kit from Ricambi. Does anyone know if it comes with the oil drain line crush ring? I would imagine not but wanted to check before I order some from Ricambi.

    No, it does not.

The standard kit includes the oil filter, drain plug for the sump, drain plug for the tank (Hill Engineering), the 2 different copper crush washers for the plugs, and a pair or Nitrile gloves.

The washers for the oil tank lines are not standard crush washers. They (145191,144485, and 144487) are rather expensive teflon/aluminum dual ring washers. Unless you have extenuating circumstances to open the lines, there isn't much reason to do so for a normal-old-oil-change.

I usually leave the engine plug open for about 30 min to drain all oil from the filter....very min oil leaks which can be caught as soon as you remove the filter.....patience....engine warm.

In my experience if you leave the drain plug out long enough say 30 min or so there won't be any oil left in the filter.
