Indeed. Brings back bad memories on how I learned about Senna. The following day.

I don't understand. From what we are hearing he wore a helmet but his skull still made contact with a rock. It was on the facial region...?

andreas, I literally just said how hard it was to have lost senna and the news could not even get the story right regarding who he was to brazil and who he was to the racing world.

I compared that to dale sr's passing. I am already getting sick to my stomach. fight champ...fight!

Could have been one of those open helmets and if he fell backwards they don't cover always the full skull to the base.

It's so ironic given all his racing accidents that this might be the worst ever. I skied for 20 years, raced even, never wore a helmet and never considered it dangerous. Unlike racing.

While you may be correct, I've seen many times where people focus on the worse only to see it was a waste of stress.

Let's wait to hear the news and hope for the best.

I'm wondering about this injury being compounded by his previous neck injury? I hope he pulls through. I feel terrible.

I don't think that plays a role here. That was his vertebrae, this is his brain being injured.

My real worry is the coma: if it was only artificially induced then ok, but reports are he was in coma upon arrival, that's very bad.

Ugh, just saw the "coma" news on espn. I didn't follow this closely b/c I thought early reports were good. :(

Godspeed Michael and best wishes to his friends and family as they cope with this whatever the outcome.

Today waiting for news for some reason that 2003 Imola race popped in my head. What a horrible tragedy they had to drive through that day.

I'd say the next 48 hours are going to be the most critical!

During this time with these sort of head traumas changes can occur very suddenly and with very little warning!

In Michaels favour is the fact that he's still supremely fit and his mental attitude is to never simply give up! - That fighting spirit can make a World of difference! (As Niki Lauda and various others have shown in the past).

Added to that he's got the best neurosurgeons possible looking after him, and he received treatment very quickly from the initial time of the accident.

My thoughts are with him, Corinna and all his family! - Fight it Schuey! - Fight it!

Same here. When I heard the second round of reports, the sentiment was that the "injuries are minor due to his wearing a helmet. He was conscious as he was being transported for medical testing" I really didn't expect to hear this news.

Prayers for Michael and his family...

He's a fighter Pete! - Just like Lauda, Donnelly, Hakkinen, Wendlinger and Zanardi.

These guys don't simply give up, even subconsciously! Their brains are wired to battle on and fight to win!

Now this fight isn't going to be easy but if anyone can win it, Michael can! - I honestly believe that!

another site is reporting that family, ross and jean have arrived at his side. if this is true it does sound like it may be dire and that they were all called to rush to his side.

this has all the makings of a real tragedy. I hope I am so wrong:(
