We have to assume that he has every possible edge. From physical condition to medical resources.
If anyone can come out of this, he can.

Amazing that this guy spent 20 years of his life going at 200 mph in a dangerous and extremely delicate high-speed-high-risk sport and it took a simple family ski trip with his son to put him at death's door.

Life can be strange at times....so sad!!!! This is unbelievable.

Knowing you, I am sure you speak with great knowledge. I can only hope the information that has been made public is not totally correct, and the situation is better than we now believe. Miracles do happen, MS is an incredible physical specimen, so I want to believe he will return in a normal function.

    And quit skiing.

    I hope you're well Ron.

Miracles do happen. I would never have predicted Gabby Gifford would be doing as well as she is. I too wish the best for our Hero.

As for quit skiing,... here I disagree. I doubt Michael would ever want to live a "safe" life. Driving cars,... bicycle riding,... horseback riding,... All have risks. We can mitigate the risks,... but the only way to eliminate all risk is not to live. And that is no life at all...

I suspect Michael will fight hard to recover,... but not to live a life of safety,... but to return to doing all the activities he loves.

Thanks to all the opinions from those in the medical field. The rest of us are just fans who can google, and have seen too much Grey's Anatomy.
Your thoughts are sobering, but hopeful

The more video interviews on YouTube I watch, the more he comes through as a genuinely nice guy and the more saddening this tragedy becomes.

+1 Thanks from me, and I'm sure everyone else here too.

As has been said many times now, we already know he's maybe the worlds #1 fighter.

"If anyone can overcome he can!"

    Cheers,

Do the doctors really have a grim outlook? Or are they just being cautious so as not get one's hopes up? From what I've read the experts around the world seem to think this kind of injury has a very high survival rate if the patient gets care quickly. But the hospital is all doom and gloom. Obviously they have more info than the experts, but it seems like a really negative atmosphere. Is this the norm in The French medical community?

I just read a Reuters story where his situation is described as "extremely grave" by one of the surgeons working on him. I think those on here with the better understanding of his situation are proving to be accurate in their expectations....unfortunately.

Michael Schumacher, the record seven-time Formula One world champion, remains in a critical condition after sustaining severe head injuries while skiing in the French Alps yesterday, his doctors said.

Schumacher, 44, was airlifted to the Grenoble hospital and arrived in a coma, said Stephan Chabardes, his surgeon, in a televised press conference today. The former racing driver suffered contusions to the brain as well as hemorrhaging. He underwent emergency brain surgery last night, Chabardes said.

“We assess his situation as extremely grave,” he said. Chabardes and Jean-Francois Payen, the head of the hospital’s anesthesia department, said it’s impossible to give a prognosis at this time.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet and the crash involved no one else, a spokesman for the Peleton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne said yesterday by telephone. The sportsman fell on the slope between the Biche and Chamois slopes in Meribel, the police spokesman said.

“Seeing the violence of the shock, his helmet partly protected him,” Payen said. “Someone who would have had this type of accident without a helmet would certainly not have made it here.”

Payen added that “the younger you are, the better shape you are in, the better chance you have, but we are not able to define a prognosis or an evolution for the weeks that are coming. We are in a critical situation in these hours.”

I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with Michael, Carina and Mick last August. He was staying at a clients house and could not have been nicer to us 'worker bees'. If anyone was lucky enough to be at the Quail for his chat with Jon Todt- is was magic. He told us of his passion for family, cars, horses and skiing (gulp)
The best quote of the Pebble Beach Concourse. My wife is at a clients hospitality looking for me. Corina notices her and says "Just wait and have a cocktail- they always come back here" I did not as I had 5 cars to tend on the lawn. My wife spend the day with Schumi, Corina and Gerhard Berger. Good thing she's an F1 fan. And she took NO pictures! Oh well. Prayers and best wishes to the Schumacher family!

Sounds like the possibility for it to get worse before it can get better. But after a few days, once the swelling is past, it might be a good time for Niki Lauda to whisper a few words in his ear.

    You're very welcome.

I tried to further humanize the terrible events here. He's a man facing something he didn't deserve and something nobody wishes to ever encounter. He's also accepted as family in this community and the footage gives a slice of life "face" to his recent activities.

    Yes.

It highlights with starkness the mysteries inherent in this life that we will never fully understand.

Remember that tsunami in Thailand? MS donated $10 million dollars. Or was it $10 million British Pounds? Either is very good. What other sports figure has ever done anything like that?

I remember all of that…as I said early in this thread his life is validated more by his exploits off the track than on it. That's saying something for a guy who has won more championships in F1 than anyone in history.

This just MUST get better…no news is still good news for now. I won't accept any re-worded doctors comments and write off the great Schumacher.

in bill Clinton's tweet, this was the kind of person he knows ms to be. I honestly was not aware of his generous history...good humanitarian and great racer.

it would be a loss of large order to the world outside of just racing.
