They always have half a dozen or so 355s in stock.
They buy low, have them serviced, sell high. I track a lot of their purchases.
Just do your homework and you to can buy low, have it serviced, and save!

    Happy New Year from Htown!

Servicing them for sale may not mean they are now in perfect condition. There may be small items ( depleted gas struts for engine and boot covers, sticky or broken switches ) or more major ones, such as worn suspension bushings etc. that might require a mechanic to detect, that could end up costing you additional $$$$. Neither parts nor labor are cheap for theses cars, but I assume you probably already know this. I'm also not sure how valuable a PPI is unless you fly in your own mechanic, since it would probably be done by someone from the nearby shop that services the cars for that local dealer. They would literally be biting the hand that feeds them.

Spoken like a true FChatter. Casting dispersions on everything 355. You know, I spend 3 years looking for a 355 before I bought one. Reading the FChat 348/355 section was probably the biggest deterrent to buying one that I had to over come. I finally said to myself, F%&* FChat and just bought the car I wanted. Not that there are a lot of great people here, but for crying out loud, get on with it and stop with the gloom and doom and paranoia.

I really wish you guys would stop talking down these wonderful cars. 'If you want a maintenance free life, live in an apartment or condo, marry and ugly woman, don't have kids, and drive a F'in Honda.' (' ' copy right, 2014)

Oh, and Happy New Year to all! :D

And most have never had one...

Those problems are mostly the same you would have on any 15-20 year old car. Do your due dilligence and you will be fine.

Actually I am speaking from experience. I was trying to speak in general terms. Recently bought a beautiful 98 355 Tour de France blue, cream interior. It is still in the shop being checked out. While some of the expenses I am incurring are my choices, such as switch to Evans waterless cooling, oil change etc., others are due to one item after another that were not initially evident. I have no trouble spending the money on bringing the car up to snuff and whatever it takes to maintain it. Was just trying to say "Buyer beware", or at least "wary". $7,500 and counting!

It's good advice. You have to do your due dilligence when purchasing a Ferrari and the 355 is one that meeds close attention paid to certain areas when doing so.

It's too bad that you have to put that much into a car you just bought without knowing that going in. But this sounds like who ever did your PPI wasn't qualified to check out the car. If anything, the PPI's on the cars I looked at were overly inclusive in their detail, even including things that "may need attention in the future". Things like bad gas struts, broken switches and sticky parts are all common issues on a 355, and other cars as well. Likewise, a person qualified to do a PPI should easily pick up warn suspension parts and most other issues, both minor and major. But a good PPI with leak down and compression test can run $1000.

Certainly anyone should have any used car inspected by a mechanic familiar with the brand befroe buying. You don't take a 355 to Joe's garage for a PPI. Additionally, while the Ferrari community isn't that big it's easy to find shop qualified to do a PPI. Just ask right here on FChat. Personally, I had PPIs done on cars I was intertested in by Ferrari dealers. Some will referr to it as a safety inspection but it boils down to the same thing. And I asked for a list of what would be inspected. Many things on those lists I never would have though of.

I agree that with a 355 or any car it is buyer beware. Noting new under the sun there. What I objected to in you post was the comment that you though it necessary to fly in your own mechanic and your comment that dealers and shops perfroming PPIs are in bed with each other. The reality is that the Ferrari community is pretty small and word gets around. An independet shop that works pretty much exclusively on Ferraris is not going to smear their reputation to help someone sell a car. It wouldn't take long for word to get out and they would be out of business.

Hope you get you car sorted.
