Interesting Comparison, 355 / 512 TR

It looks a lot wider then the specs

Possibly I can squeeze it in my small ass garage, we live in a beach bungalo

 

You will NEVER get that car into your garage if you want to get into it via the doors. I couldn't get it in my garage!. The car is wide, the doors are wide and large and the door threshold is 11 inches. If you have about 3 feet of space on the driver's side you might be able to get in if your are Bruce's size. You can't see rearward very well, the car is heavy without power steering and rides like a slammed pick-up truck. Otherwise it is very collectable.

 

My friend locally just sold his TR after having it for 10 months. His comment was that driving that car was an "event". No PS and hard ride, to your point Vince. But he got 2G more than he paid for it from someone who knows them well, so they have their fans.

I own a 512 TR. Yes, it has no power steering and parking this car really needs strong arms. And it is a huge car. But it is so much fun to drive. I absolutely love this car. I only once drove a 355. As far as I can remember a 355 is much sportier and more nimble. A 355 is more a kind of a race car where a 512 TR is a GT. Very comfortable and roomy and you can drive for hours in this car.

Very different cars and best would be to own both…

Dave, I agree. I would love to own a 512TR as well. They have a lot of presence. Nice updates on the TR and a significant decrease in production numbers.

 

The TR is certainly a iconic Ferrari, but when you look at prices, they seem to be a steal for a 12 cylinder exotic and you have to wonder why. Two thoughts: some of the TR owners I've talked to give me the impression that on those windy little roads that the rest of us love, they are having a white knuckle ride because the extreme width. That rear end is truly massive!
Second, if you think the maintenance costs of the 348/355's is high, the TR is truly shocking. The engine "major" costs will curl your hair. All that for a 0.7 second improvement in 0 to 60 over a 348.

 

The preference for a TR may not necessarily be for performance.

Despite my comments, the 512TR will be collectable far sooner and far longer than any 348. They are the last of the Boxer 12's. The base TR has a little yet to go, but they will catch up. The F512M is already in the collectable category as the final and best iteration of the car.

 

You're correct, the 512's do well. I was thinking more of the standard TR. They seem to run 60k or so. But then a Murcielago seems to run the same or less than a Gallardo.

 

Yeah, it will be a while before Wayne Carini flys across the country for a barn find 348.

 

OMG, I almost choked on my saliva...

Too funny. I like Wayne, good guy in person and quite humble and approachable to the enthusiast. Don't particularly like the show or its premise, but that's a tangent.

I chuckle at the prospect of seeing an advert for an upcoming Chasing Classic Cars show where Wayne sniffs around looking for a very rare 348 Serie Speciale hiding in a garage in the Palos Verdes area of SoCal.

 

I was shocked at how similar the front views of the cars are considering how different they look otherwise! By the way, the 512TR is also one of my dream cars and the Ferrari I dream the most of adding alongside my 355…well that and the 458 but I will probably have to wait quite a while before I can afford one!
