Good morning, I belong to a track here in the Houston area - MSR Houston which is a great facility with great staff. My son and I just completed the SCCA competition license course - 3 days in our Spec Miata and I in my Abarth (which made some new converts at the track). I'd like to take my 355 F1 Spider on the track for some spirited driving as we have that privilege.

I'm sure many of you have done this and I had some questions: What tire pressures would you use in your DD tires? Any other preps you would recommend? I have new Pirrells on the car now and not interested in another tire just for a few hard laps. Thanks!

I don't think they allow spiders on track days (no roll bar)

They say all will be OK. I plan on going out on a weekday when there are few other cars and I don't plan to stretch it too much. The track is FIA cert, 2.4 miles and fairly tight with 2 decent straights.

I go out and warm up tyres, come back in and lower pressures to my standard setting.
When being more accurate I get a laser temperature gauge out and measure across the surface of the hot tyre to see if there are any parts colder than others and adjust appropriately, eg if cold in middle increase pressure a bit.
Off hand i think the pressure cold is about 26psi.
Then I add in how it is handling and adjust again to increase / decrease over understeer.

I just checked the notes I have from my last outing on track. With street tires I use 31psi on the rears and 33 on the front. That is what I would set the pressures at first thing in the morning before driving to the track. As posted already, do a few laps not more then 10mins worth at those psi, come in and stop within the pits area so tires don't have time to cool down to much, check your pressures. If the Rears are between 38 and 40 that is great, the fronts should be close to 38 but not higher. Once you have set them at the track like this then you can leave them alone for the rest of your track day. Have fun, take it very slow and be extra, extra smooth with your throttle and brakes.

Something else to consider...the F1 system downshifts itself during braking. Pay attention to that while you're pulling that left paddle so you don't end up a gear lower than what you want.

This seems the most valuable bit of advice so far! Blown 355 motors suck.

If I remember correctly, it states in the owners manual that the F1 trans computer will not allow downshifting to a certain gear if it will put the engine in an over-rev situation.

I mentioned this because a couple of times at Summit Point I almost spun the car hitting the Go pedal exiting a corner being in too low a gear.

I also hit the rev limiter at Pocono so I know that works.

It was a good thing to note :) I am not sure I would want to confirm the computer would in fact intervene if you are in the braking zone and pull the downshift paddle while travelling quicker then you should be. I think treating it like a 3 pedal care is the best approach when you are the one paying the bills if you break it :)
