I guess I don't understand why hooking up a fresh battery in parallel to the weak one would cause so much damage. Was at Ferrari of New England yesterday. There were portable power cells all over the place to jump cars with

Never had a problem jumping. Most newer cars are built to regulations, I'd be highly surprised if a simple jump would fry a newer Ferrari. Corrosion, moisture, galvanization, rust........ Those are more likely culprits. How many owners regularly check battery leads? Hardly any. That probably is the source of your trouble. Ferrari build quality can be bad sometimes but not that bad.
