Not the same engine: the 8.32 has a cross-plane crank, whether the 3,2 from the 328 is flat-crank.

Interesting - I need to look up these differences. I am curious now.

the Thema has a cross plane crank - not flat plane crank - that is the major difference, as well as the Ignition & FI is different to.

in the day it was a cool car - sounded differnet than other Themas ... but ultimately not much of a car.

I got to ride in one from Montreux Switzerland to Chamonix France and back up in the mountains - and it was fun ... but not quite a sports car. if they had put that engine in the Delta integrale - that would have been epic!

I read that this was done to control comfort level in the luxury car.

A trade-off, actually, if my memory serves me still well, Robert: enhancing torque somewhat to the detriment of power, which in fact is what you would expect for a luxury car. The engine was redlined at 7400 instead of our more usual 7700.

The car never was very popular here in Europe. You can find some for sale from time to time. Or even a complete engine and trans, still in the adds after quite a few weeks here in France at 6000 euros - no takers.

Just another thing I wish I wasn't born 20 years too soon for. Cool trivia. Thanks.

ive never driven a 8.32 but nearly everything is different as i recall. i believe only the of the heads are the same and maybe the pistons /rods (memory fuzzy on the later two). block is different where you cant just bolt it on to the 308/328 transaxle. the 90 degree cranks as already mentioned plus cams of course.

intake manifold are different with the injectors relocated on the opposite side... perhaps this is a better set up with a more direct shot to the intake valves. there are two versions of the 8.32 intake plenum with the later ones with longer runners for more torque. at least one version ran with a twin TB set up. plunger injection metering is located in the valley of the V.

the exhaust manifold are different as well as relocations of the ancillaries and pulleys. The clutch is hydraulic vs the cable. perhaps the end mounted transaxle orientation with a gives you a slight CG advantages mounting the motor lower down from the axle flanges when compared the the 328 set up.

    happy new years

Cross-plane crank was mainly for idle characteristics I believe. It will idle much more smoothly than our flat-plane cranks. Then the other stuff was packaging for the Thema engine bay.

    Thema 8.32 has a 3.0 4 valve engine btw.
Had one, awesome car. Porsche 3.2 carrera`s were never happy, but understood when I took the spoiler out to wave goodbye.

crank was the main difference, but belts , cams and so on are also different.

if you translate the caption above the video... apparently the Thema had the same powerplant as the BB??? A bit of "poetic license" being applied here. NOT.

Interesting. My 308 has a way smoother idle than the 8.32 Thema I got a ride in a few times. Maybe it was set up wrong. Maybe the Thema was missing a balancer shaft or sthg.

3X8 became a classic, Thema just an automotive footnote.
