Alfredo did not design any V6's, Jano did. At best, Alfredo had a bit to do with the 4 cylinder Monza engine, but so did others, their role was buried by later myth making.

Enzo was adamant that only V12 road cars would bear his name. The Dino was a sub-brand conceived under FIAT control, to compete against Porsche. They eventually put Ferrari badges onto slow-selling 308GT4's because Enzo no longer had control.

The fact is that the Dino was a Fiat-Ferrari (just like a 914 was a VW-Porsche). That was the intention at the time and it's what actually happened. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Many Fiat Dinos were also built at Maranello, but nobody makes a claim that they're "true" Ferraris.

None of the non V12s were considered Ferraris in the 70s until the magnificent glass 308GTB was conceived. Enzo was so proud that a mid engine V8 was so much better than everything else in the range that he was happy to put his name on it. Since then, all front engine Ferraris have been considered the GT cars, where the mid engine cars are the sports cars and the ones that more closely related to Ferrari's racing heritage.

    I read that somewhere.

    Unfortunately,and I'm guilty(or rather,my garage is)of having a 365GT4 2+2 and I don't really think they will take off for a looooooooooooong time,even further for the 400 manual's,as for the 400 auto................................ummmm.

If I'd have bought the 330 1st,I would have seriously considered a 308GT4.

it's bollocks. The Ferrari name was already on 308GT4's, the Dino marketing experiment had failed and was buried.

Enzo hated mid engined cars, he said words to the effect of "the horse should pull the cart" and he resisted the design until repeated humiliation by Coopers meant he had no choice. Ferrari's racing heritage was primarily V12's. Their only F1 V8 was a Lancia FFS.

His personal Ferraris were all front engined V12's. Later he drove Fiats (and a Mini!).

Nooooooooo.....we all know why "Ferrari" was put on the 308GT4...marketing only.

The quote you're attributing to Enzo was made in 1948.....you'll notice that the cars his F1 team ran were mid engine....like all good sports cars should be.

How many WCC did Ferrari win with V12s v the other engine configs?

I notice the only people talking up front engine V12s are old men you like to discuss "the good old days" and Golf drivers.

And Enzo had concerns regarding potential buyers of road cars not being up to the level of driving skill required to handle a mid engine car once it broke away.

That's why he made them so damn good....so that amateurs like me can handle them.

No skill required in V12s, of course. They neither turn nor brake, so as long as you can change gears (slowly) you're fine.

I get so dismayed by the acceptance of after-the-fact inventions, by well meaning people who don't realise they've been lied to.

It's like the Carroll Shelby myth: he put the 7 litre engine into the GT40 and won Le Mans.

The truth is that a Ford clerk in Dearborn forgot to place the order on ZF for the GT40 transaxle, so they had to run with Collotti's for the first couple of years, which always broke.

When they got ZF's they started winning. The 7 litre weighed much more than the small block, made bugger all extra power and used more fuel. It was a dumb idea but Shelby made it into the myth of his brilliance.

Well you were running pretty quick times in the F40. That would take fair skill and courage.

The legend of Ferrari was built not only on F1, but also with Sports Cars and endurance racing. No other marque has been so successful across all 3 disciplines. It is important to remember that.

If you count them up, you will find that more WSC, Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Daytona, Sebring, Carrera Panamericana, etc wins were achieved with V12's than any other engine. And yes, a good number of F1 titles.

and that is because the flat 12 BB handled like a pig, because Fiat had to put the transaxle under the engine to make it fit. If they'd used a V12 (like their world beating sports prototypes) there would have been no such problems. A 250LM is a beautiful handling car.

and yet, a BB could drive around the outside of a Daytona which it replaced.

So, if the BB was a pig, the Daytona is a........???? what

    You're not counting a flat 12 as a V12 again are you ?

But totally agree on the Le Mans and endurance races won by the V12 .... and having now driven a couple of the old timer 12s for many miles I can see why they won so many races, they are bloody easy to drive at very high speed with little effort.

But no 60 degree V12 ever won an F1 title to my memory
