Air conditioning didn't work when I bought my '81 GTSi (it holds vacuum the way a sieve holds water) and I've never missed it.... So I thought I'd remove the compressor just because it's heavy and in the way.

Lower bracket and tensioner... No problem. Nuts holding compressor to upper bracket... no problem. AC lines.... No problem. But the damn thing won't come out because some of the studs for the lower bracket are in the way.

Can I just double-nut these studs and remove them, or are they part of the cambelt cover supports? If I remove them, will I have to do something else for the cambelt cover?

[Edit: You may be wondering why I don't just take the cambelt cover off and look for myself? Well, I can't get the cover off as long as the AC compressor is in place]

Just double nut and remove the studs. I replaced mine with bolts so it was easier to pull the AC compressor when I did a belt change.

When my 81 was in the body shop, we pulled out the condenser in front of the radiator. The car runs much cooler now.
