I didn't think that this was possible! But getting down to the last few bits on getting my '83 QV back together I find something fairly disturbing. After dropping the lump in and connecting halfshafts, clutch, throttle, wiring, coolant lines, etc without any issues - today I drop in the EGR and Fuel injection distributor. From the rigid alignment of the EGR tubes and the exact length of the WUR fuel line and the cold start injector fuel line, and from the length of the molded hose that goes from the fuel distributor to the cold starting valve - it appears that the motor is about 1/2" more forward in the car than when I took it apart. If memory serves me there was not that much slop in the motor mount holes. I don't believe I cold have reversed front and rear motor mount brackets if that is possible - but it was tricky to identify which ones went where. Any ideas - this is a poor time to find something like this!
Can you post a pic of the mounts on the engine, I should be able to tell if you have them correct or not. remember one thing the REAR mounts have a 1/2 inch spacer between the gear box and mount Wade
Several questions: Did you replace the motor mounts with new units? If you are using the original mounts, are you sure the are in the same corners as before you pulled the engine? Have you connected the top "dog bone" mount, and if so, has its position changed? With the engine installed, have you check to make sure it is level front to back?
How does the shift linkage line up? It seems reasonable to assume that if that is okay the engine is correct and the fd needs to be spaced forward? Otherwise ........ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The last picture shows the thick spacer on the mount that I intended for the rear - bassackwards! Here's hoping as this is an easy fix!
Those are correct, your spacers are in the right place, not sure what you could have done. You cannot put the spacers on the forward mounts, the studs are not long enough Wade
My '83 parts manual shows thick in the front and thin in the rear - so I had them backwards. Things are much improved but still tighter than they were. Motor is level now. I would appreciate if someone could verify the bracket positions from the pictures posted previously. I will get some help and push the motor as far back as I can in the mounting hole slop to see if that buys anything. I can fix the length of what is tight if needed. Thanks for the comments so far. I just looked at my '83. Your rear brackets are correct (could not see my fronts without putting her on the lift).
Raised my confidence in this piece of the puzzle to 100%. I am still puzzled on the spacers under the mounts. I have found several contradictions. It might be that you shim to what works.
Can someone with an '83 QV make a simple, I hope, measurement for me? Take a tape measure and put the end on the engine bay rear bulkhead - at the top - where the insulation is cleared for the "dog bone" mount as shown. And measure to the pin next to the idle adjust on the throttle body as shown. As I am now sure that the motor mount brackets are correct - this will give me a good representation of how far the top of the motor is from that back wall. Ok, not sure if this will help or confuse you more but I have 3 308's in the an 82 and 2 85's 82 - 13.5 inches US car 85 - 13.5 inches Euro car 85 - 14.0 inches US car none of which have spacers / washers at the mount for the engine strut brace (dog bone) Wade
I measured my '83 US-spec QV (build date: Oct 1983) exactly as you show in your photographs. The distance is 14 5/8" (37.2 cm). I have no reason to believe my engine has ever been removed from the car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Actually, he wanted the measurement to the pin next to the idle screw - your photo shows 14 1/4", exactly the same as my 84 measurement that I posted above.
Hi Art, Here's a pic of the pin from my '83 Euro QV. it has the same amount of shim washers under the torsion mount (3 on each side) as in your picture. Hope this helps. Dennis. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mine is at 14.25 now also. Front spacers are Hershey Kiss pointed up with one washer on top. Back spacers are recess side up with no washers I scooted the motor as far to the rear as mounting- hole slop would allow. There is one shim at the rear wall on the dog bone bracket now. The motor, at the bottom covers, is very close to level with the frame. So the nagging question is what changed? Other that having the spacers swapped initially, the motor was clearly needing slightly different spacer and 'dog bone" shim configuration for things to reach. The fact that it was four different items that would not reach excludes any one motor side item from being the cause. And the fuel distributor has no location slop with its rubber mounts. Brian Harper has his '83 motor out and will snap pictures of all 4 brackets to put this to rest for good. I really appreciate all the help from all of you! Art
The several times I reinstalled a 308 engine, I had to realign certain items. There are too many small variables that, when combined, can alter old settings. A lot has changed since the time the engine was last installed. Again, I am talking about a shim / adjustment here or there to make everything fix. As long nothing is completely out of whack, made your adjustments and move on. FWIW.
Yes, I had the kisses up, I think and the back spacers on mine were recess up. I had washers in the recesses of the back spacers and nothing in between the front spacers. OK, I'm going to admit that in the chaos of three guys who don't really know what they are doing pulling a motor out that I didn't take as many notes or pictures of how things came apart as I usually do. But I'm pretty sure this is right. I actually engraved the position on two of them but the powder coater blasted the parts and eliminated one of the engravings altogether but one was still very faint through the thick coating. So I'm sure of one. And I have a bunch of pictures from making urethane motor mounts for my GT4 so I have those as reference also. I think this is right. This is what I had for the spacers. The kiss with no additional washers and the disc with a washer in the recess. Everything was so caked with gunk that I didn't even know there were washers in the recess until after much parts cleaning - I thought it was all one part. Image Unavailable, Please Login
