    Hello,

I am Tom van Remmen from the Netherlands and have a Fiat Dino with THE Dino V6 2.4 engine! Here a question regarding this engine which has been sleeping for 20 years and just started it a few months ago!

My engine is leaking oil (I guess) on the exhaust headers and annoyingly smoking on the RH side of the engine where the cover plate is from the timing chain tensioner. Can I just take it off, replace the circled part in the photo and fit again? (or do I also need to replace the gasket? )

Do I need to adjust the timing chain tensioner again when I take it off afterwards? (already checked it and was fine, but valve cover is already on again)

Furthermore; Oil pressure relief valve; in some old bills from the 80ies I found out that the valve was stuck, and therefore the engine had wrong oil pressure. They corrected it somehow, but should I check this again after 20 years? is this a sensitive part and difficult to get? Or should I be able to read it from the oil pressure gauge in the car if the valve is working or not?

    Thanks already for thinking along!

    Kind regards,
    Tom van Remmen
(also saw online that there is a plate developed to prevent leaking oil on the other side on the alternator?) (‘the dino deadly drip saver’ see here; Dino 246 Restoration Blog: January 2013 ... saver.html )
(however that doesn't solve the problem, and is more developed for the other side to save your alternator just in case)

    Tom,

In my experience it is usually the o- ring that is leaking and I also use a Hylomar/permatex non hardening sealant on the threads as extra insurance.

If you decide to remove the housing to also change the gasket I would recommend removing the valve cover and locking the camshafts in place before removing the tensioner housing as the tension will be removed from the chain and it might jump a Tooth or two causing incorrect valve timing and unneeded grief.

I would test the oil pressure with a good quality mechanical gauge. I personally wouldn't trust the oil pressure gauge in the dash as an accurate indication of oil pressure. I use mine as an indicator that oil pressure actually exists, nothing more.

I would be interested to see the description of the repairs on the relief valve. In 35 years of working on vehicles as a profession I have only seen an oil pressure relief valve fail once and it was the valve spring that broke cause low oil pressure at all times. Due to the fact that Ferrari valves are adjustable people play with them when there is no need to or unscrupulous people increase the oil pressure to cover up excessive bearing clearances.

Feel free to pm me if you would like more information

    Jamie
