991 GT3 as a DD?

I would do it in a heartbeat and add a Sharkwerks exhaust

 

Take it for a test drive on a road that needs resurfacing and see if you can tolerate the ride.

I have 19-inch wheels on my Audi and many days I wish I had the standard 18-inchers and a less sporting suspension.

 

I don't know. It would be great for N. Georgia mtns and Road A but daily commute? I have a 997 GT3 and it's not an easy DD. It bottoms out on everything. Lots of road noise, tire noise, stiff suspension... And you can't help but push the load pedal and make it roar. It would not be my pic for a dd but it's a damn fun car.

 

Scratch that...what am I saying...get the GT3. You only live once!

I say do it. My commute is 50 miles RT as well. I drive a 997.1 GT3 w/ sharkwerks bypass and commute with it approximately 2 days per week. It isn't a problem for me at all and I get stuck in stop and go traffic often. I don't drive it everyday, but that is more a function of not wanting to put worthless miles on it. I don't get excitement out of it if the entire commute is stop and go and I never get to hit 8,400 RPM. However, if it was my only vehicle, I would happily drive it daily!

 

do it...one of my great automotive regrets is selling a 6-GT3 because it was too "aggressive" for daily/city driving. god I miss that Metzger...

only downsides (besides comfort, etc) would be reselling a 50k mile 991 GT3 in a few years. but if that's not an issue for you, go for it.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but, since its not a manual gearbox, its ideal for commuting, so I think it would be absolutely no problem!

 

I hear 'ya brother .... clutch=fun. On the other hand if it was meant as my sole DD, I could see myself going with the automatic ... I mean 'PDK'.

 

Well, clearly you need a 997 GT3 RS. That's the last 3-pedal GT3 Series Porsche. I have devoted an entire thread to the GT3 RS wherin we wax lyrical and extol the virtues of the car. joe....this is my current thinking for a DD. I drive about 6k miles /yr. my trips are often to OC or LA and if timed right...traffic is not the monster that one would think.

buying a gt3 RS would be a sound choice as it would remain investment grade in 10 years from now regardless of mileage if kept well in the interim.

my dd choices have been thus far been a 2012 sls, on 2005(6) vanquish s, an F Type R Coupe and now the gt3 RS.

all fun for different reasons but the sls and GT3 RS seem the most viable.

 

Thankfully the Tiptronic has been retired and buried out in the yard.

it's defiently the most suited gt3 ever for daily driving but if you're going to encounter any traffic at all then imo it's hard to beat a e63 amg

 

Frank I'm in Atlanta and have a 997 GT3RS so here's my 2 cents: the 991 GT3 will likely be fine as a DD, but realize it's a little like a leashed tiger in commuter conditions - it's going to be a little frustrating at times to be toodling along in traffic, if that's what your commute consists of...the 997 GT3 is likely less of a DD, due to less sophisticated and harsher ride, stiff clutch, etc. - not that you couldn't DD it if you were dedicated...

IMO a standard 991 is the best in traffic DD of the 3 choices, if overall the least satisfying to own and drive. The 991 GT3 be worth it if you are able to do a lot of open road driving. Hope that makes some sense!

This GT3 is the most capable DD and fun to drive of any car I've ever driven. On track, it screams (the 9000 rpm is incomprehensible) and the lightning shifts of the pdk keep it in the sweet spot, so it pulls and pulls.

On the street, simply turn off (or don't turn on) the stiffer suspension or sport mode nor the exhaust and it's as docile, ergonomic and more comfortable than my 2013 750Li. It's smooth, comfortable and keeping it in auto is simple and easy around commuter traffic. Push it over to manual and it's as real a dual clutch transmission and feel of a race car as anything purpose built for the track.

Not to sound cynical, but unfortunately you may have quite some time to deliberate because unless you're on a list w/ a build in the works, I hear it's about 1 1/2 years out before you'll see a number for production?

 

Yep, I tried to 'get in line' at my local dealer with a deposit. They said 'sorry we stopped taking deposits since Porsche has so many orders now they don't know if they can fill any more or not'. They wouldn't take my money .... unless of course I might be interested in a Turbo S?

 

Tom, this new car-of-the-moment scenario never lasts long. Patience is a virtue. I'm in the same boat, and I refuse to go along with the suggested solution - pay a premium and get one now. A time will come when you can get a delivery mileage car for sticker, either through the dealer or in the secondary market, happens every time.

 

I paid under msrp. Mine is due april 11. I know of a few allocations left. If you are interested pm me. It ll probably be at sticker from what I understand.
