    Jag hasn't built a sports car in a long time. The XJS, XK8/R, XK/R are sport touring cars, usually younger folks don't understand the mission of that car. I was at the Jag dealer yesterday, and a new XKR coupe was next to the F type convertible, being able to compare them side by side, I was surprised to see that the XKR isn't that much bigger than the F-type. However, there was a customers 2003 XKR coupe, and that car looks tiny next to an F-type. Man I miss my xkr coupe, hopefully I'll have it back before springtime.

    The F-Type Roadster is shorter and narrower than a 458 Spider (albeit not by much.)

    Drove the F-Type base roadster today, nice car. But I agree that it's overpriced for what it is. Seemed very light and tossable, the opposite of what I expected and the low end torque was excellent for around town. My wife's favorite currently, she will be coming out of a 2011 M3 Convertible. Very limited trunk space. Coupe definitely looks better but she only does convertibles at this point.....Hopefully in a few months huge deals to be had, typical of Jaguar's to this point in the past many years.

    Very cool! Makes me want to ride around in a helicopter sipping tea whilst plotting against my enemies.

    Oh, and buy an F Type. It also makes me want to buy an F Type.

    the coupe is a hot looking car! it has the power too...it will be a contender in the market @ $100k.

    btw, as good as it looks on film, it looks better in the metal. its proportions are lovely. think aston v-8 vantage sized.

    I just ordered a new Coupe R in Polaris White with the R spec Alcantara seats. Elected most of the options with the exception of the carbon brakes. This is a bit of a flyer as I have no idea if I'll like how it drives but on paper and in early revews it is quite exciting. ETA is late May.

    Those are alarmingly low sales volumes. Hopefully the coupe jump starts sales.

    Hopefully, but in this price range I suspect most buyers aren't going to take it on a track and so likely want an open top. (In the used car market F430 spiders seem a lot more common than the coupes, for example.)

    I think the pricing is a bit high and depreciation will be typical British, as posted earlier, which may keep buyers away.

    It is a sharp car, though. I see a lot of Z8 in its lines (from the back).

    I would think the Ftype coupe would be more popular than the roadster b/c I see the Ftype buyer planning to use the car as more of a daily driver than how a Ferrari buyer would use his/her car. The Ftype is a good alternative to the 911 and would be cross shopped by Merc SL and BMW 6 series buyers. It would be interesting to see what Jaguar's Ftype sales goals and results are with women buyers -it seems like the car should do well with women.

    Jaguar was hoping F-type production would be 9000 - 12000 cars annually. With just the roadster, and in the US alone, those figures annualize out to about 3100 cars per year. Not sure I agree with your and Bob's take on this.

    First, not that many want a real convertible. If you look at Corvettes, about 25% are convertibles and 75% are coupes. People say they want convertibles because they are sexy but most just want coupes. How many people in the UK want a $100,000 convertible? The UK must be their 1st or second largest market.

    Second -- timing. It's tough to sell convertibles going into winter. As soon as you hit August, people wonder how much they are really going to use it in fall and winter.

    Third -- looks. The coupe just looks better and is more practical.

    Fourth -- early adopters. Some who own a coupe will switch to a convertible but very few convertible owners will switch to a coupe. So, you get the same people who like the car buying 2 cars in two years.

    I understand and agree that the coupe will be the "volume" seller, but from a marketing perspective why does that mandate it be the first to market? How long was the Boxster available before the Cayman?

    Chevy sold 2800 C7's in January. Their year goal is about 24,000.

    By contrast, Jag sold 171 cars in the US in January. Even if they sold 3 times more including overseas sales, that only get them to 6000 cars a year.

    Maserati used to get that number from 2002 to 2008 and we all thought those numbers were pretty weak.

    Bottom line: They need the coupe. The coupe will definitely increase sales for them.

    People buy want they want and need, not what people think they need.

    The Jag is a GT, not a sports car. Apples and Oranges.

    To get to 9000 cars a year, they need coupes. Only in the US market do people really buy convertibles in large numbers.
