Emphasis on 'Linear of Response' in a naturally aspirated engine vs. a turbo, as noted by 'Noblesse Oblige' and underscored by 'Kahl360', is right on the mark IMHO. It's the ONE most immediate difference I notice between my 458 and my 997 Twin Turbo S. In the 458, I feel like I'm a jet pilot in total control as the car rockets forward. In the 997TTS, I feel like I'm half pilot, half blow up doll as the turbos spool up, then jettison me savagely forward. Yes, there's a big torque difference favoring the TTS, but it borders on being out of control.

as long as Ferrari will build naturally aspirated V12 it's not a drama

They also have some very interesting plans to create that additional profit that LDM mentioned when talking about reduced production through what I can best describe as associated business.

Vague! :) Not that I'm not willing to believe you, but there are sooo many claims lately being leaked from top insiders everywhere... just as sub-7 times for the P1, etc. Give us something more solid! :)

    So will 430s, 360s, and 355s, right?

458 prices are going nowhere but down for the next 10-15 years. It's a standard cars made by the thousands any nothing else matters.

All I can say is that it will shake up a small part of the automotive industry and a very obvious idea.

    Can you say
    " Electric powered Turbo"
    3 times.......fast!

    Now say
    "Pressurized no Lag"
    5 times!

    The future is here, now!

I think that Ferrari understand that if they will not go into turbo they will have no chance to beat Mclaren on the racetrack, rumors say that at Geneva mclaren will show 458 speciale competitor with around 650 hp, I think that most of us prefer Ferrari over Mclaren but anyway it's hard to argue with lap times

I figure this, if Ferrari goes turbo with the 458 replacement, they will do it right. It wont sound like a McLaren, basically lacking any real music. It will sound like a Ferrari should and will deliver on performance. The f40 is one of the best cars ever made, I think Ferrari knows what they are doing. I do hope they stay N/A but whatever happens I am sure it will impress us all.

I don't know about that. F40 didn't really excel in the sound department and there are companies with a lot more turbo experience than Ferrari who have never been able to deliver an NA sound.

I welcome a turbocharged engine and enjoy the sounds they make. The spooling turbos, the screaming waste gate, the whooshing blowoff valves and the exhaust after it has spooled the exhaust turbine. And if you can't get a turbo car to do your bidding when driving, go get some driving lessons. Did you lament the loss of training wheels on your bicycle?

Progress is progress. As Travellor says, it's inevitable. It's also exciting if they can find a way to take some if the new emerging F1 turbo and ERS recovery technology and bring it to the production road car division. That's what Ferrari is all about. The paying public will lap it up and it will be EPIC.

I'm all for it. The next question is will they use a CF tub or not. Then McLaren can truly say they were ahead of the curve.

As long as they build the best turbo engine in the world, I don't care.

Probably the opposite. People always like the new technology over the old.

high quality CF tubs are hard to come by...very labor intensive. McL hopes to double capacity and make around 400/yr. That will not work for Ferrari who makes 7k cars a year.

LaFerrari aka F70 may be the exception. ;)

... and the 458 turbo-successor will be the winner of each performance contest. A small glimpse into the future:

With such a power in the rear I can live without the "sound crown". ;)
It will be as always: with the successor comes the better Ferrari.
