Hi guys I want to remove my OEM door mid range speakers and wanted something that is literally plug and play. I dont want to cut and splice or alter anything I just want old out and new directly in. Are recommendations or suggestions ? Thanks PS - a rubber mid will be a huge improvement over the paper OEM speaker so that should be enough for me.
You might have a difficult time given the shallow baffles of the stock speakers. I just put in a pair of Focal 165s and they are VERY close to plug and play, and they sound GREAT
Hi the Focals you fitted how deep were they , I have found some which have a depth of just under 50mm so quite shallow , is that the depth of the ones you fitted ?
I installed Hertz 165XL ... got new woofer baffles and cut out the old ones ... we are talking about the foam baffles that cost about $5.00 for a pair aren't we? The Hertz speakers do require that one use a jig saw with a very short hack saw blade to cut a bit larger opening so the larger diameter speaker frame can fit though. Kinda funny, cuz the new speakers are 165mm diameter and the out frame fits perfectly ... it is just that the the magnets are larger and the supporting framework behind the outer flange was bit larger than stock F-car speakers. Nice thing after that was that I was able to re-use the original speaker grill so have stock set up ... one cannot tell that they are new speakers ... sure can hear the difference though. Stev
Just have installed new speakers Morel virtus . Fit perfectly and could keep original cover Grille. Sound is now different
Hey Wolfe, Last summer i was looking to replace my speakers with something plug and play. I strolled down to best by bought a pair of inexpensive speakers for the door, its a standard size. Most anything will fit, I paid about $50 for mine, possible less. Pull the aluminum trim off and there will be a VERY small amount of modification to the wires necessary but I am confident that even someone with basic skills could do it. In any event there was a HUGE improvement over stock. I was blown away with what fifty bucks did to the sounds quality and wish I had done it years earlier. One thing though, if you want to do a legit job, i do recommend a heat gun and some shrink hose to make the connections proper. Best
Wolf, My sub blew over the summer and took the opportunity to replace all of the speakers. Per the recommendation of the board, I installed: - Focal 165 A1: 6-1/2" 2-way Access 1 Series Component Car Speakers System. ~$180 - Focal Utopia Be 13 WS: Shallow-mount 5" 4-ohm subwoofer. ~$500 A huge improvement over the stock system. While I haven't heard another modified 360 system, I do recommend this setup. Would absolutely do again. Hope this is helpful- Kenny
Bottom line...They are terrible. Sometimes it is awesome to hear the car, for instance I turn down the radio when I go through a tunnel or when I am driving near brick walls and glass buildings, parking structures, etc. But then there are those "other times" like when you are keeping the car below 3500 RPM's for the first 15 minutes of the drive until the oil is good and hot or when you are close to your house and you live in a nice neighborhood or when you are following a tourist snapping pictures and there are no passing lanes, or some police sitting on the side of the road and then my friend...music is quite nice! Here is what the stock door speakers look like FYI.. You're welcome. The opening for the magnet that goes through the door substructure is quite a bit bigger than the speaker maybe +1" diameter. I know that some guys are running Focal 165 speakers and depending on which ones you choose I think the tough part about fitting them is the yellow plastic foam area where the leather runs out at about the 1 o'clock position on the pic of door with speaker out. Can you Focal guys confirm this? Some of you guys had indicated that you needed to trim a little and i think this is the spot. I want to run Focals myself but want to keep the "mods" to a minimum.
I installed Focal speakers on my M5 (now sold) and they are indeed excellent sounding speakers. Very highly recommended and thanks to the folks here confirming Focal 165's do fit on a 360 with minor trimming. I went with Polk Audio speakers on my M6 and very happy with that too. My 2009 M6 by the way is now sold. Just sold it today. Saving up now for my next dream car - 360 Spider. Hope to buy one before the end of this year. For now, reading posts here and learning a lot. Thanks to everyone here for sharing great information. Dan
great replies here guys thanks, looks like Focal is the way forward here. Im replacing them as was pointed out that are a POS and the offside speaker I think has a small (now) tear in it so sounds balls.
Let us know how it goes. For reference, a shop in NYC (Technik1- Gus is great) installed the speakers and sub within a few hours. Shouldn't be a large lift. Also of note (and I'm sure most of you know): get them to install the iPod cord into your stock Becker system. Should be the cheapest and easiest mod you can do to your 360. Less than $50 or so. There's a number of threads on fchat about it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
And please mention which model Focals you bought, they are all different dimensions for the magnet area. I am talking about the 165's
I would prepare yourself for some trimming, especially for the foam baffle behind the speaker. Good luck! Deiger
I know I am jumping boards here, but I just upgraded the speakers in my 99 355 with Focal 165VRS - Focal 6.5" Polyglass Shallow product. No sub (very limited room) but I am very pleased with the upgrade. Picked them up do Woofers Inc in Los Angeles for $530 which was the best price I found. The speakers fit beautifully in the door, but I did have to make some slight mods to the oem tweeter mount as they were a bit larger than OEM. Nothing a pair of nippers and a dremmel could not take care of in my case, do a quick search and measure the size of the OEM tweeters to make sure. Also, the crossovers were a bit large, but I found placement under the dash. Sound is amazingly better than OEM. Good luck!
