Sorry man, got about 3 minutes into it and pretty much fell asleep! Doesn't sound good, pretty slow, and very definitely short shifting!

With all due respect, hardly what I'd call 'stunning'! Plus, I had to sit through a damn advert first!

Following a camera car round just doesn't do it for me! I guess it may improve later, but couldn't be bothered to find out......

    Cheers,
    Ian

I wish they sounded like this. It's a GTR motor sped up to 15k RPM.

Cosworth v8 in the Mcl and Alfa used both the 12 and turbo v8 that year.

Edit: IMHO both cars look better than today's...

Regardless of what it sounds like, look how incredibly flat it remains under braking, it's also running a bit more rake than last year even.

maybe because it can't go fast enough to create enough of a load under braking? lol

When you say more rake what does this mean?

The angle it's sitting at relative to the ground. Zero rake would mean the underside is parallel to the ground. They all run slightly lower at the front than the rear, and that's the rake angle. Typically changes as they 'dive' under braking (or indeed squat under acceleration). Fpiloto is saying the Merc maintains it's defined (static) rake angle well.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Don't give up quite yet guys! What jumped out at me in that report was these times are more or less identical to those achieved at the same test in 2001! This was of course with the mighty, and much missed, V10s.

    :)

    They never asked! ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

So...the cars only being as fast as the ones from 13 years ago should be encouraging? Plus the whole sport was different then. There was engine development throughout the season and cars got markedly faster from year to year. These will be much more stagnant. In addition to that, people actually sandbagged back then.

I think a more important stat is how much slower they are than last year's cars - and the 2013 machines were far from setting any lap records.

The drivers are saying not to look at the engines as the culprit for slower times. It sounds like they are "VERY powerful", but the lessening of aerodynamic elements is what's making it harder to drive fast during cornering.

I'd imagine making aero rule changes would be a lot easier than changing the engines…if that were necessary. I'll wait to see how things shake out in Melbourne before panicking too much.

    +1

They're also saying Pirelli have gone *very* conservative with the tires...... Can't really blame 'em after the **** storm last year! Talk about a no win situation.....

    Cheers,
    Ian
