Nice manifold!
They did do a great job, wish I could say I made it! Heres the underside. Im going to bead blast it then paint it silver like OEM. Once the manifolds are in my hand Ill have carbs mounted and an updated pic about a nanosecond later. It was a lot of work to get to this stage, the CAD drawings took some time and it did present some challenges going from carbs to the 4 valve head but it worked out. The biggest challenge was getting the carbs to land exactly where they do on a carbed boxer so the air cleaners would fit and fit under the clamshell. Ferrari decided to move the intake port location vs what the boxer had so there was a lot of measuring and mocking up to get the dimensions right. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ahh! Newman is posting in the TR section. Hadn't seen a post for a very long time. Searched on your Screen Name. Another extremely cool project! Glad to see you remain gainfully employed.
Intake manifolds done but I will glass bead them and paint them silver and I need to detail the top of the engine a bit more so it all looks clean. The manifolds fit perfectly and look super hot, love the carbs on the Testarossa engine, should make for an interesting first test drive! oh yes...that is a cool project unfolding before our eyes!!! those carbs are very cool!!! will this carb conversion be duplicable with a boxer injection motor? pmo carbs? newman designed linkage?
Stock BB512 linkage works which was the plan from the beginning so only the manifolds are fabricated and everything else can be OEM. Not really practical to convert a BBi. The problem with an injected boxer vs a carb'd boxer along the lines of converting is the rear clamshells are different to accommodate the different inductions. The air box covers are closer together on the injected cars vs the carb'd cars. The carb'd air boxes are directly over the heads so the straight up carbs are centered under them. The plenums on the injected version are under the boxes. Converting to throttle bodies would require an angled intake manifold that aims the horns under the air box covers unless the throttle bodies were very short. Ferrari decided to move the intake ports on the testarossa vs the boxer. These intake manifolds took that into consideration so the carbs sit right where they should to fit a carb'd boxer clam shell and to allow the OEM linkage and air cleaners to fit if desired. We will be running tall stacks on this one for the visual impact though.
Linkage shot, ignore plating color this is how it came to me so Ill throw the levers in with a batch of silver and make the shaft grey. The yellow zinc the shaft was plated with added dimension so the shaft wouldnt pass through the spherical bearing supports. I removed the zinc from the ends for now but will need to remove the rest before the color change without adding dimension. Even if a person had no idea what they were looking at, they'd have to say that was one marvelous piece of machinery. Love it Newman. Are there additional manifolds like this stacked in your Dr. Crazy closet?
It does look cool, the rear 3/4 view is the best angle I love it! Lots of ideas in the crazy closet lol, great name for it. I may be making another pair of them but taller than stock for a race application.
A local shop I use for machining or repairing, they have state of the art machines. I say local but its a massive multi-building facility. I had them weld up some 246 Dino heads for me a few weeks ago for an engine im building. Pretty handy shop.
Release bearing was beyond baffed. Its sounded like a floor jack on a gravel road and its not cheap. I replaced the seals in the bearing collar so I dont have a fluid leak once its back in the car. Glass bead blasting the manifolds after confirming linkage alignment and final mock up. Ill paint the manifolds like the boxer manifolds were then back on. Today I test fit the Testarossa engine in the black boxer (with permission - thanks Dave!) to see if the headers fit as planned, to see if the alternator and a/c compressor fit under the rear ledge. Everything fit and it looked right at home. Ignore the condition of the accessories I need to do something about that but the main thing is they fit with zero alteration. Check out the ground clearance, the headers are higher than the frame rails. This will allow a boxer to be lowered and not have a ground clearance issue. Power increase, lower center of gravity = much more fun. Last pics shows (crusty) stock 512 headers which illustrates the ground clearance change to the testarossa engine and headers. A couple of views, plated hardware and rod bolt access plates really cleans it up. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
