Drove all the way to Vegas to register my 355 and that CAT failure code came on during the last 2 miles. Can't pass now and have to turn around and drive back.

Anyone have a good source for someone that can rebuild them? Smithcat's phones are no longer in service.

I have hyperflos in mine dont know of any re-builders that are CARB approved

    Very cost effective

They could not turn the airpump on to get it to pass emissions?

I bet they could not because it threw a CEL.

This could have been avoided if you paid attention to what I told you back in your original thread. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355/435925-cat-o2-sensor-voltage-help.html

See post my post #2. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/142882702-post2.html

And for all you other guys try to get it through your head once and for all that if you throw a CEL on an OBD II car, even a 355 Ferrari, it IS telling you something is amiss. And when both the per and post car O2 sensors are giving the same signal it's a pretty sure thing the cat is not doing anything.

Since I had the dealer replace the ECU for the cat (Right side), I had spent enough to qualify for a waiver. As a last ditch effort, I used the steel wool in front of the post cat trick, and it PASSED!. Able to get everything done and registered.

On the drive back home the CEL came back on but at least I was able to get it to read clean for the test.

Just FYI, Rich the service manager and the crew at Penske-Wynn Ferrari in Vegas are great to deal with. Very fair and reasonable on their parts pricing (in the range of Ricambi) and worked with me on the labor. I'd be bringing my car there for sure if I lived closer.

Since my car is now registered in Nevada and not California, I have a lot more options on what type of CATS I want to put on the car. They don't seem to care there if its OME or not. Just needs to not throw off any codes. That being said, I'd like to see if I can re-core my original CAT to keep it stock.

I'm now throwing a current fault P0422 - Main Catalyst Efficiency below threshold and a pending fault of P1451.

The secondary air pump is mounted right near where the CAT ECU for the right hand bank is located, up under the rear fender behind the wheel. The wires may have been improperly reconnected or disturbed when the new cat ECU was installed. That could cause the P1451. Pending means it sensed it once and is waiting to see if it occurs again before turning on the CEL. But it sounds like you still need a new cat (P0422). If CARB approval is not needed you can go with Hyperflow, Nouvalari, Fab Speed..... Replace both sides. If SmithCat is no longer rebuilding cats I don't know where you can get the OE ones rebuild.

Don't need CARB as long as I keep it registered in NV. As I may want to have it registered again in CA someday, I'd like to find someone that can rebuild my OE cat. SmithCat phones have been disconnected. Davico manufactures cats but they won't send you original back so that won't meet CARB.

Yes, I know about Davico. I have a couple of hollow OE cats I would love to have stuffed but I can not find a place either. I wonder what going on with Smithcats as their web page is still active. Someone is paying to have it hosted.

I wonder if it would be possible to buy these Vibrant Catalytic Converter With Metal Core - Punishment Racing and fit them inside the OE housings? Cheap enough. 300 cell metallic core for $115. I may give it a shot.

My bank 1 cat was failing. Pulled the post cat O2 sensor, shoved a wad of 00 steel wool in the hole and put the sensor back in. Reset the CEL with my OB II reader, drove the Ferrari recommend reset drive procedure and had the car tested. Apparently the steel wool limits what gets through to the sensor enough to pass. Light came back on about 100 miles later but it lasted long enough to pass.

In all likely hood the steel wool had nothing to do with it. It takes a while for some CELs to be thrown. Remember you drove all the way from CA the NV before the CEL came on with no steel wool. Only a few CELs will come on immediately after a rest, like a opened O2 heater.

For example, I regularly get a CEL on my 3 series. "Evap valve stock open". I reset it, go through a drive cycle, and it passes emission. Drive a few 100 miles and the cel comes back on.

I don't know about NV's program, but here in CT the problem is that after the rest the car needs to be driven to have the monitors go into ready mode. In CT you can not pass emission even if the CEL is off if more then 1 monitor is not ready. This is to prevent people from simply resetting code before going to emission. So in CT it is a combination of no CEL and at least 7 or the 8 monitors being ready. NJ may have similar requirements.

Code was reset and then I drove the Ferrari reccomend reset drive cycle. I believe the steel wool did work as the previous day without it, car was throwing the code doing the exact same procedure at the dealer with the same reset cycle.

If you wanted, we could make you a set of "factory cats" that had our HJS 200 cell catalysts actually inside. They would look bone stock, but pass visual and tail pipe emissions tests. They give a very nice bump in performance on the 355.

Can't speak to the 355s, but after pulling my cats over the weekend to install a new exhaust, the bolts used to secure the cats to the header, and the cats to the exhaust itself, were extremely rusty. If the cats are the ground for the sensors, then the path back to the battery must go across these bolts, into a flange that is also rusty, then onto the header prior to reaching the engine block. I'm not sure if the gasket is metallic or conductive, but even if it was, mine were so fried I doubt they were doing much. I really should have taken some resistance readings prior to pulling it all apart!

In any case, it is VERY clear why, as Brian and others pointed out recently, why it is a good idea to run a ground wire for the cats. If the ground is bad or subpar, it can make any of the sensors flaky, especially with all the flex in an exhaust system (all the bolts have springs in them).

    Just sharing my experience.

355 have 4 wire O2 sensors so I don't think it's an issue. I.E., both the heater and the signal have their own ground routed back to the ECU.

Come to think of it, the ground strap recommendation may be to simply improve on the ground back to the engine. That actually makes a lot more sense. Was over-thinking it, and running on 6 month old baby sleep deprivation. ;)

In which case, the strap from the sensors themselves to the battery may be more appropriate, to compensate for any flakiness in the engine ground.

I think the color of the o2 wires makes more sense now thanks John
