Finally had a chance to check the ac out in the trunk and good news the system was converted to r134a already and still blows cold. There were a few devices I could not really identify though it seems to be mostly brake abs or climate control in there.

What exactly is the computer on passenger side in the pic? My guess is abs related, and the black pumpkin on the drivers front must be the brake booster since it is hooked to the master cylinder. I must say the car has some " like new " looking components for being 24yrs old at 39k miles. Unfortunately the insane cold has killed the new battery and all I can do now is inspect, clean and learn the cars many components.

Your right - its the ABS computer and the brake booster.

BTW I notice that you have a fuse in each of the sockets net to those 4 relays. The end one with a white dot on should be empty and IIRC a 3amp not 30amp fuse. Its only in there to trigger the diagnostics for the ABS so pull it out.

Also, see the 30amp fuse for the those 2 green relays - its notorious for melting so pull it out and inspect it or even better relplave it with a circuit breaker as I have done here

If you want to go one step further pull those 2 green relays out and clean up the contacts on them and give them a spray with contact cleaner as I suspect thats what causes the greater draw of current leading to the melting (but just guessing on that one as after cleaning mine the beaker witch no longer tripped out).

I agree with everything 348jeff said.
My question is what's with all the gold colored wires running past the ABS computer? I'm guessing after market stereo and amp set up, or is that the optional ejection seat wiring?

If that fuse is in wouldn't he get an ABS light every time he turns the car on?

The gold cables are coming from a 500w amp for the speaker cabs behind the headrests. There are a few delicate looking devices and wires in there. I did start reseating a few relays to find oxidation on the contacts so not sure how much I will mess with while everything on the car is functioning properly.
