So I'm pulling the cams on my '81 GTSi (many shims to replace, opportunity to replace plastic cam sprockets with milled metal, oil leak at smog pump end of rear exhaust cam).

I think I've figured out most of the seals and gaskets that I'll need when I put it all back together again, but there's one thing I haven't been able to work out from the parts diagrams. What exactly do I need by way of gasket/seal/o-ring for the smog pump drive?

Look in the Parts Catelog. Most of our parts sites use it to assist. Check our Sponsors. That cam has a different seal on the pullie side.

It is timing the cams within one cam degree that is the hard part. Do Not think the assembly marks are accurate. They can be wildly off. They will only let you reassemble the engine without a valve-piston crash.

If you are talking about the pump itsef, replace it. GM part. Jeep Cherokee IIRC. Check the Parts Cross Reference sticky above. That sticky is represents tens of thousands of hours of research, trial and error and success.

Get ahold of David Feinberg. He can get you sorted out with parts and advice.

I just did this exact project on my '78 a few weeks ago. It isn't hard, just go slow and double check everything. I reassembled the bits exactly as they came off (except for replacing some lifters) so avoided the cam timing steps. My assembly marks where spot on and identical on reassembly. Don't forget to mark your distributor rotors with a sharpie at TDC.

You will need a special socket to remove the ring nut that holds the pulley on then there is an oil seal behind the pulley.

There's lots of research in the sticky, but the GM smog pump part number is in the official Ferrari Workshop manual. That's one cross reference that the factory gave us.

But I think he means the seals that go on the cam.

Yes, that is indeed what I mean. More specifically, the seals on the smog pump end of the exhaust cam - the part numbers for the seals and o-rings on the belt ends are easy because those are in the online parts diagrams all the vendors have.

Silly me... OF COURSE I should be looking in the '80 GTB section for an AUS variant when I need parts for a North American '81 GTSi... :p

Many thanks, that's what I needed.

If I knew how to do it I would have a couple of years ago.

I LOVE being the odd guy out. Being "a thorn" or "******" is right up my alley.

And the funny part is, for stock cars well tuned, the butt-o-metter can hardly tell the difference. Pretty much "False hard-ons." :D

Nothing slow about the 2vi. I know, I've seen!
Consider this: Take your 4-valve, your fiberglass, your 328 (I love all of them), and put them on a racetrack with a F-40. Ok, terrible comparison. Make it a TR or Boxer. Right, still poor comparison. Now put them on a track with a 2Vi. If you don't follow this logic, then just know that ~25 years ago when these cars were in their peak "go use them" phase, (You know, when you'd go to a dealer to get an air filter and 4 sets of points and they had them in stock), and you'd see them at all sorts of FOC / FCA / Shelby / CSRG etc events. It would be common for 2vi to take first place at the Virginia City Hillclimb. There were a couple of these cars up there that would do great.

I wonder if 10 years earlier, Ferrari 275 4 cam owners looked down on other cars? :)
