All but one ( still looking to complete the registry to find if AMC or Chrysler bought one too!)

And Count Volpe's Serrenessima cars with his motors reworked Mangusta

There was also a 3 seater Pantera with a Maserati engine

John, any idea where the Ford one went, it was an early yellow one rebadged Shelby MkV if I recall.

The other one (red late model with the rubber nose) was the Bordinat car.

If I recall there was a 3 seat Bora too, maybe it was a Merak.

I've never head of such a thing? Perhaps possible in a Merak as it's already 4 seats and has a shorter engine.

But I don't see how in a Bora, you'd have a crankshaft up your ...

You may have just missed him then.
I was stopped along the side of a road in NW NJ one day fiddling with the webers on my Espada and he pulled over to talk a bit. I was somewhat preoccupied but what he told me is that when he was at Ford they bought an Espada to study it and they all went out to lunch in it frequently. He also said that they stole some styling cue from for the new Mustang.

Well that was his story at any rate. Seeing the car made him nostalgic.

Yes he said he was a designer.

The nose on the Bordinat Mangusta is not rubber, it is leather over rubber, and the original leather is in place and well preserved. This is according to the current owner.

So, I'm sitting in a restaurant in Carmel with my lovely wife, and some random guy and his beautiful wife is sitting right next to us.

I overhear a few words. "DeTomaso". "Espada". Mangusta", and I sort of start listening in.....

Finally, I turn to guy and introduce myself, "I couldn't help overhearing, but.."

So it turns out that out of 220 or so Mangustas in the world, we end up sitting down at the exact same time at the exact same place. As the car talk started up, we were each so fortunate to have wives who were happy to completely ignore us and chatter away as much as we were.

Honestly, with a bit more luck I know there were at least 4 or 5 other Mangusta owners on the Monterey peninsula that weekend.

Fantastic thread. Went through every page over the past two days. One of my favorite designs of that era. Congrats to all you guys who restore these cars and keep them on the roads. Just posting to subscribe to the thread!

    Cheers,

    George

I predicted on BAT...would receive a few bids, then disappear in a private sale. It did. Gone in less than a day.

I thought the one off Mangusta spyder was in Canada and that the latest owner learned from the previous owners not to sell it too cheap,or at the wrong auction. Yet on an Italian website today I found this ad offering a Mangusta spyder for sale

DeTomaso MANGUSTA SPYDER top condition come Cabriolet/Roadster in modena

In the ad I saw these poor quality (shot in shade) pictures of a car purporting to be the spyder for sale for 220,000 Euros. I haven't coimopared them to the oriignal car but I suppose my answer to the next question would be answerable if there are major interior differeances. Iwould think being the one and only spyder it's a million dollar plus car.
So now I am wondering, is this a replica?

Yes, it is a replica. The original is still in the Great White North.

It is nowhere near as nice as the original in all the small details. I have seen the original up-close and also seen several good photos of this car, which was constructed from a very late production Mangusta. The "original" is actually one of the very first production Mangustas built.
