I'm checking out a nice-ish 96 GTB at a MB dealer in VA. 17k miles, looks good. OEM manifolds and exhaust, guides have never been done but the car checked out ok per local dealer, last major was done.......in 04! Nice looking car otherwise. Asking 62k which I think is way too high but I am sure they are flexible. I'm thinking not more than low 50s for a car that needs what is most likely a big major and other things. I like the mileage, but I'm feeling 'run'.

Assuming it passes a PPI private party price would probably be low 50's. If they haven't had it long they probably wouldn't let it go for much less than they are asking. Nothing wrong with being a serious buyer and making an offer though.

Yup. It's a ROW car. Look at the side marker lights.

That interior carbon looks like absolute crap too.

Moving on then, it's removed from the short list.

Not every car needs valve guides and headers.

I think you need to find the colors you want.
The sticky interior parts can cost more than headers so it would be nice to find one all done but it might not happen. Plenty of these out there.

Are you keeping the 308? I kept mine.

I literally was staying in a hotel across from this dealer on Monday. I couldn't do the work I was supposed to that day and searched for Ferrari's locally. I found that they have a GTB across the street!

I went over there, and it had just left less than an hour before on its way up to Ferrari of Washington DC. They said they were having issues with starting it and they were sending it there to get a new battery and trickle charger installed. I chuckled. A dealer sending a car 75 miles away to have a new battery installed. I told them that I could of probably saved the trip and figured it out for them. They said "do you know where that battery is? it's in front of the wheel, we're not touching that."

They have no idea what a F355 is, except that they have received some calls on it.

I was able to look at the service records, which are few. I thought it showed the last major in 09, which means it needs one anyways. It showed that the original headers were replaced in 04 or something. There was a $5K line item for headers on one of the receipts. I did not see valve guides or anything.

I saw the NHSTA letter stating that it was properly imported/certified, and I was curious as they said it was a 96, if it had OBD-II. If it is really a 95, then I would not think it had it.

There was also a line item in 04 or whenever for cats....maybe they added them at that time? I have no idea.

IMO, over priced, needs a major, they said it had some stickies. Not available for viewing, move on. The used car salesman thought it was so rare because it was a GTB with six speed.

They received it on trade, some person traded in 5 cars (this being one of them) and picked up two new MB's. If they can find somebody who doesn't know these cars who buys on impulse, they can sell it, but it sure sounds like it's going to take at least $5-10K into it for somebody who doesn't know how to work on them in their own garage.

Looks pretty nice to me. Sounds like it just needs an engine service and a bit of minor usual updates. It's a rosso corsa OBD1 GTB 6-speed which IS the best configuration afterall. This one is going to sell fairly quickly and I'd say it's worth seeing. I'm about 45 minutes from the MB dealer and 45 minutes from the Ferrari dealer where the battery is being replaced so let me know if you reconsider.

I spoke with the sales manager a couple times now and I believe it's now clear they haven't any idea what they got themselves into. Last major was in 04. They don't have much flexibility in the price....

Still, someone will buy it but I believe such a sale may require a more impulsive buyer.

From what I can see and the last major in 04, I'd say it's a low $40s car. Dealers always say they have no flexibility in price. If they don't sell it in a month they will wholesale it. Reminds me of the 99 F1 with 6k miles I almost bought a couple of years ago. Car was cosmetically perfect, sat for 6 years. Originally the dealer wanted $80k. I watched it and it dropped and dropped again. I got interested at $65k and offered $52. No response. I upped it to $55 and ultimately made a deal at $58k. The PPI was not acceptable and the dealer agreed to fix some things but not others. I walked, but before they refunded the deposit they offered it to me one last time at wholesale: $55k with the partial fixes. It still needed a major and tires and a window controller and a headlight riser and a number of other things, and I had stopped the PPI before the compression and leak down were done.

These dealers will always say they have no room but the reality is they will dump the car for what ever they can get as time goes by. This is a Mercedes dealer, not a used exotic dealer. I would bet he just wants to roll it over ASAP. Look at his inventory. It's all stuff that is easy to move. The 355 sticks out like a sore thumb.

Many dealers will say anything. In November I made an offer to buy a Maserati GT. They said "our offer is FIRM". We were only $2K apart. I walked. 2 months later they sold it for $2K less then my offer.....

    Now that's good business LOL

A used car dealer told me recently "always take your first offer" because there might not be another one and the car just goes stale.

Anyone here know the 3 C's when your buying a used car? See you keys, see you car, see you later. Not a good way to do business.
