348 engine out major

I'll start by removing the intake tubes and idle air control valves. A while back I did a post on removing the plenum, here is the link for it. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/technical-q/305475-348-fuel-injector-intake-plenum-removal.html But for now a pic of the intake tube and IACV off.

The one way check valve for the secondary air injection are the next thing to come off. I used a big crescent wrench to unscrew them. remember to remove the vacuum hoses running from the diaphragms to the solenoids. They are at the bass of the intake runners, near the oil filter.

I take them off because they get in the way of the valve cover coming off. You'll see in a bit.

Here is a pic of a solenoid I was talking about with the vacuum hose already removed. I also disconnected the solenoid plug as the looms are coming off.

The oil vapor vent lines attached to the top corners of the valve covers are next to come off. These are the lines that run under the air box and get attached to the oil tank.

Loosen the hose clamps, then take the lines off.

Next I remove the fuel injection lines and the fuel pressure regulators. This is just a pic of one already off, and you can find a better description of how to do in the link I posted above (post #76 ^).

To prep the wiring looms to come out I will start by unclipping them from the O2 sensors. These clips are right under the oil filter. To unclip them just press down in the wire and then pull them off the connector from. DO NOT pull from the wire, pull holding onto the connector while pressing down on the wire. Sorry for the blurry pic.

Now that they are disconnected I need to get them out of the retaining brackets. Do do this you will need to grad ahold of the connectors then twist them 90º. This unlocks them allowing you to take them out. I twisted this one counter clockwise.

Now over to the connectors for the coil packs and the ignition control modules (aka: ignitors). Same deal as before, press the wire down while pulling the connector off the coil plug or the ICM plug.

Oops forgot to mention disconnecting the loom union. Do this when you are disconnecting the O2 sensors.

The positive cable running to the battery, and the cable coming from the alternator get removed from the starter. If you look down, and just to the left of the terminal bolt for those cables, there is a connector there that needs to get unplugged also.

Then I popped out all the spark plug wires/leads.

I then unbolted the heat sink from the subframe, with the coils, ICM, and plug wires still attached.

You don't have to do this step, I just did it to get it out of the way because I was going to be hosing down the engine to try and get off a bunch of the crud built up over the years.

Now that I have disconnected everything I took the plenum off exposing the wiring looms.

Last thing I needed to do before removing the looms was disconnect the wires from the oil pressure sender, the coolant temp sensors, and the coolant temp sender. I only have a pic of the oil sender connections, but the others are pretty self explanatory. Oh yes, and disconnect the plug on the back of the alternator, and unscrew the positive bolt. After I have everything out of the way I stuff rags in the intake ports, so nothing gets dropped into the engine.

After I stuffed the intake ports I covered them with packing tape, and seal it up good. This is to help keep water from getting in the cylinders. I figure if any water gets past the tape, the rags will catch it. I also taped up the spark plug holes, and covered the air injection tubes. Be sure to cover the other sensors on the engine before you wash it.

Then I rolled it outside and gave it a little bath. Don't have pics of this part. It got cleaner, but not spotless.

Now that some of the crud is off I started removing the cam belt covers.

First up, the top inspection caps.

Using an allen wrench I took out the four bolts holding the covers to the top exposing the top of the belt and the belt followers.

You can see, I left a nice space between the follower and belt from the last time. I didn't want any wear on the belt as a result of the followers rubbing on it.

With top tops off the allen bolts holding the front cover in place where next to get removed. Then I took the cover off exposing the cam belt.

For those of you wondering, The last time I did the major I had a bunch of parts powered coated red. I think it snazzes up an other wise boring looking engine. No for everyone, but it is for ME.

I don't remember if I took the crank sensors off before I washed the engine, or after. Maybe it was before. Anyway, I removed the crank sensors.

There small bolt holding the sensors on the engine block. Looking at the front of the engine one sensor is to the left of the pulley, and the other on the bottom of the pulley.

Now unscrew the nut for the bracket that holds the connectors in place, and remove the crank sensors.

Just so you know, those are KIA crank sensors.

To remove the alternator belt you must first loosen the retaining bolt on the front of the tensioner.

Then unscrew the tensioning bolt on the bottom loosing it, and remove the belt

Before you do this line up the cams to there marks on the cam caps. More on that later.

After lining up the cams….

Using a 36mm impact socket and a strong impact wrench. Be sure it's an impact socket because the wall thickens of a regular socket is not as thick as for an impact wrench stock, and won't transfer the energy as well. Using those take the crank bolt off the pulley.
