Think about buying a leak down tester. Anyone have any recommendations? I see the Long Acre for $105, a U S General for $54 to $35 depending on where you buy it. I know the Harbor Freight unit is not well thought of.

I bought the HF one. You are welcome to borrow it anytime. I also bought their CC also.

I remember you were going to check your car. Have you had the time to do that yet, or has the cold held you hostage. :)

I'll probably just buy the US General one sold through Sears Market place. Sears.com though this one looks better made:

Test Equipment/Tools - Longacre Leak Down Tester But it doesn't come with all the adapters.

OTC makes some decent stuff at a good price. A step up from HF for sure

I have both and the read close the HF does not come with the correct threads for a 355 you have to make your own or buy one with a long neck to fit way down in the deep hole

Ha John. I don't think I have even started the car since that thread.

Good to know what Tim said about needing to makeup an adaptor though.

Tried it, but the search on this site is too vague. Also searched recommendations using google.

Saw the OTC unit. Price varies for $60 to $130 depending on who is selling it. One thing I don't like about it is that the leakage gauge is not a direct read. I have the required extensions from my compression tester.

Actually I'm not concerned with my 355 as the guides were done as part of the purchase. All cylinders 5% or better. I'm curious to see how my 150k mile Toyota truck and a couple of other higher mileage vehicles I have fair on a leak down.

IMHO - Harbor Freight is poo.
I bought their compression tester and the numbers were way off.
Replaced it as defective and the new unit was way off.
I replaced it with a Sears and got different numbers.
Went to the mechanic who used his snap-on and matched the Sears numbers.

    For a leak-down, I stopped screwing around & bought a snap-on.

Just to add tedium to this...

When I was at Algar watching it being done on a car I was having a ppi done on, Tony mentioned that he likes and uses a one gauge leak down tester and prefers that. I really don't know why but here is a pic of the one he uses. I can't find it in a google search looking at images.

Found a review of several by Hot Rod Mag. I went with the Long Acre.

Looks like an old school Sun unit, as good as anything you'll buy new IMO.

Yes that sure is a good "old school" Sun unit made right here in the USA many years ago. I collect their items and they still work real good. There is quite a trade going on EBay for their items.
