Any suggestions on how to get the rear hub off? This nut seems to be tapped in on the sides pretty far in. Also what size is the nut? I need to go out and buy a large socket.

Use or borrow an impact gun. The pinched in sections of the nut are above the threaded portion of the shaft. Just zip it off, but replace the nut with a new one and dimple it just the same after your repair is complete.

This is a common thing to see on any car, mostly on Axle shaft nuts, or any shaft that rotates in a bearing.

OK. I have both am impact and a breaker bar. Transmission is in gear. Attempting to turn the nut turns the axle. What's the best way to hold it steady so I can remove the nut?

Before someone mentions searching the threads - I've done that. Several posts about difficulty removing the nut but nothing about how to stop the axle from turning. I don't see any holes to shove a bar or screwdriver through to help secure.

As for the "ears" on the nut, mine seem so far pushed in that I may have to drill them off. Tried knocking back with a screwdriver and a punch but only seems to push them farther in. Tried to pry with a small screwdriver which simply bent.

No worries. You need a hardened mandrel, not a screwdriver, to pry with. Then, with the impact gun, the axel will not turn. You can hold the hub with one hand while the impact gun is doing the job for ya!

If you put in a couple of lug bolts, you can then insert a long pry bar to hold the hub against the air gun.

If the brake caliper is still on you can jamb a big screw driver through the slot at the back and into one of the vent slots of the rotor, then fire away with the gun (after bending those dimples out from their slots).

OK. Nut is off and the axle is loose. Now what? There doesn't seem to be enough clearance to remove the axle around the stock headers. Don't tell me that they have to come off too! Or do I have to go the other way and remove the starter? I have been tryling to "roll" it that direction but it seems to get stuck there as well. This keeps getting more complicated.

Also, is there supposed to be any fluid inside the flange coupling and the axle? When I disconnected the two, I had a small amount of fluid come out, maybe 1/4 cup. The flange looks to be a solid piece so even if the transmission was leaking through the bearing, I don't see how it would get inside between the flange and the end of the axle.

Never mind on the axle removal. I was able to roll it out toward the rear after completely shredding what was left of the cv boot.

Still curious about the fluid in the flange though.

Right side inner and outer cv boots changed and all back together. Took about 10 hours but it was a learning process so I am pleased. Saving the left side for next weekend. Now that I know the process, I expect I could do that side in 3 hours +/-.

Nicely done! Are you going to take pics and make a DIY? It would be helpful for the next guy, should you have the time.

There is already a few threads and someone from FChat put a 3 part video on YouTube on changing the CV boots on a 348. Other than the actual cv bolts (allen vs 13mm) the process on the 355 is almost identical. The video is well worth watching for anyone doing this for the first time.

I don't know what I could add beyond this. That being said, maybe I'll take photos on the left.
