thanks I appreciate the words of encouragement!
Flying is one of the best things I ever did for myself. One of the few activities that kept my interest consistently. I started with a new Archer and traded all the Piper airplanes up to the Meridian. Owning a turboprop is an incredibly expensive proposition but the best and really only way to use a private airplane for travel. Train continuously and get your instrument rating. That will make your flying much safer. I also recommend a multi engine rating, if for nothing else than the training in the aerodynamic behavior of two engine operation. Welcome to the fold.
another update guys: to date i've logged close to 40 hours in the cessna 152. 10 hours of which has been solo time. i've completed 3 solo cross coutries (50NMs). My instructor says i'm just about ready. He said we will do a few more sessions to review maneuvers, stalls, etc and then I will go for my check ride. Then I have to pass the written exam and i'm done and will have my vfr license. hoping to still get this completed before year end!
+1 Agree. Also, earning your PPL is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Once you are a pilot, you'll always be a pilot. .
When I got my PPL our school wouldn't permit us to take the oral exam or check ride without having first passed the written. I'd highly recommend just getting it out of the way. I found it to be the easiest of the three exams. It was pretty basic. Computer prep programs make it a chip shot. Mark
Interesting how different schools have different requirements to get to the same place eventually. I was not allowed to solo until after I had passed the written. I have certainly not heard of doing the written after the practical.
Thanks guys. I had another person here tell me te same about needing to pass the written test first. Im going to verify exacty how this will go when i meet with my instructor today
Often the oral exam will focus will be on those areas of the written exam that you did poorly on. If you haven't taken the written the DE may just make your life miserable by reviewing every topic during the oral. Also if you haven't taken the written would you then have to go back to the DE afterwards to get him to issue your PPL paperwork?
It certainly is. Maybe it was just how the examiners in my area did the testing, but the written was basically a pre-req for the oral, which was a pre-req for the check ride. Everyone's oral was on the morning of their check ride and a lot of the exam dealt with the fictional cross country planned for review by the examiner. If you passed the oral, you then moved outside, preflighted the A/C and did the check ride. The preflight was actually part of the check ride. My examiner was quizzing me the whole time while I was doing the preflight. As others have said, getting your PPL will be a day you'll never forget...just like your first solo. I got mine at 17. Easily one of the proudest days of my life. I still remember the two questions I really struggled with on oral and during the check ride. It's funny how certain things are burned into your memory forever. Mark
Instructor said i do have to pass the written exM first. I downloaded a $40 program on my ipad that has 863 questions thst he said will comprise the exam. The program is cslled dauntless is anyone familiar with it?
Not familiar with that. Both the Gliem and Sportys on line had all the questions and you can take mock tests that replicate the KATS test format or you can just concentrate on one subject and test your knowledge that way. I was doing 2 or 3 mock tests a day leading up to my actual.
I'll give a nod to Sporty's program which is available in app form. It's great. I'm not familiar with the one you picked up. Mark
rmani, congrats on your progress! Looking at my old book too, I see my solo was 3/20/77, still remember that morning well, after it was over I remember thinking "did that just really happen" lol. I'm glad I discovered this forum, you guys are all so interesting and your knowledge is incredible!
hey guys. I passed my checkride yesterday. I was nervous and didn't even have tine to prepare due to business travel but a switch flipped and I destroyed the oral and flying part. I'm officially part of the group of licensed pilots on this board! Thank you to everyone for the support an assistance!
that is great, congrats! So when's the first plane purchase going to happen, (and does the wife know?) haha.
Thanks guys I appreciate the kind words. This has really been a long time coming that last couple months I just really wanted to get it finished. I think I will eventually continue and go for the ifr license but for now i'm going to take a brief break and just enjoy my accomplishment.
