I was wondering if anyone has the jig for relocating the oil drain hole in V8 4v heads? It's the jig seen here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/139190284-post3.html
I'm in need of one and would be willing to buy or rent it. Any help would be appreciated.

Also I know ricambi loans it out but only if you buy a major service kit, which I have not. I already asked and have been turned down. So no need for that suggestion.

Perhaps somebody with access to one of the fixtures would be kind enough to measure it and share the geometry.

This is a very good idea and would definitely be helpful.

I gather this is a modification that is often done?

What is the harm in leaving the cam seal drain in the factory position? Does it make the seal prone to leak?

Is it possible that Ferrari intended a small pool of oil to remain behind the seal for some reason or is it certain that this is an engineering or manufacturing error?

It is often done because the oil pool tends to leak when sitting for a long time. So in order to help prevent future leaks this should be done. Ferrari changed the drain hole hole location late in the 348 series and then made it a service alteration for all 4V V8's.
There is no harm in leaving it as far as engine durability or safety. It's been this way for a very long time......but leaking :-(

This mod if done alone would not cause oil from behind the seal to drain back. It would only drain the area behind the O ring on the seal carrier ring. There would not be a lot of point in this because if the O ring is leaking it needs to be replaced.

There is a different mod which cuts a slot in the seal carrier to allow oil to drain back from immediately behind the seal.

Ideally both mods would need to be done but they rarely are I think. I have discussed this with a couple of Ferrari specialists and they dont do this as a matter of course.

I know about this and it will be done but it's a non-issue because it requires no special tools.

    To add:

When I recently had my cams out I thought about doing the mod to the seal carrier. But on close inspection a groove deep enough to allow oil to drain comes VERY close to breaking through into the groove for the O ring. I decided it wasnt worth the risk.

I often wonder whether part#144973 has the drain (it supercedes part# 117257).

Such a shame they are not cheaper (or hills dont make them) then they could just be swapped out during service...?

This is a valid concern and I too think it's too close but If I get the jig then I will check to see the coverage of the drain hole and maybe just clear a path with a chamfer and not a full grove to make sure the hole is clear. If I don't get the jig then I will just leave it as is and try a better sealing process.

I was thinking about this also.

I did the same thing after I made the mod drain hole. This mod really works. My car hasn't leak a drop since and I'm using synthetic oil. I highly recommend the mod when you get around to it.

I had not seen the entire service bulletin before but it's good to know the groove is supposed to be so close to the o-ring. All the posted information is very helpful......now if I only had the jig :)

Thanks for everyone's help and photos. I have successfully done this modification without the jig. I looked at the pictures of the jig, the finished entry/exit holes and the head itself and was able to determine where the hole needed to be and it's trajectory on the 1-4 side. The 5-8 side is a no brainer and was actually done. The 1-4 side is tricky because the oil galley is right there.
