The classic car hobby - as is also the case with classical music - is simply a dying interest. Rare is the teen or 20-something who has a genuine, somewhat fanatical enthusiasm for either.

Didn't mean to get political in my last post. Just that from the conversations I have had with people, these were the reasons given.

From what i see 40% of kids have no interest in cars unless it fills a necssary transport need. Part of this is the regulational hurdles to drive, traffic and most moderns neither inspire nor are fun.

There is still a minority of kids really really into cars, and if you think of it, have we car guys not always been a minority.

As for UCLA, well you live in a socialist state and all yuth must be indoctribated there..

China imports more rare wine than was produced in any given year. But wine is an easy to understand status, its a label/price thing and its also easy to keep and show off. A classic car needs certain care, if you have seen the crowded roads in China smog and general driving ability you would realise that a classic car there might be a great hobby showcase, but for most its just going to be too much of a burden with little joy.

Yes some classics will sell there, just as some do elsewhere and this will tightent he market, but its not going to be a huge driver for most classics. Yes a Chinese billionaire will want a 250 GTO because its the most expensive, and a few others for the same reason, a TR may even be useable there, but a miura or CT, I just dont see it.

Look at the middle easthwere there is more than enough $$$, not ahuge classic market either, a few collectors yes, but most wnat the newest and greatest.

Although I do concur with the apathetic nature of today's generation regarding cars, I am wondering what then will still cause the hype and jaw dropping stares that accompany any ride in a Countach? This amongst a hundred cell phone cameras trying to capture every line on the car.

Is the Countach in a class by itself?

no argument on that. To make your point, a 512BBi with color change has been sold well over $200K in a few days in NY (BB thread). RM sold one at $220K. These were 1/2 price from that level not that long ago and nobody wanted them!!
Granted, the BB has been a bargain for a long time but it seems that in a very short time most car doubled people are now fighting over them. So the spike is well beyond the lambos.

The fact is, markets go up, and they go down, that's an absolute law. They have been going up for some time, so, the next chapter will be downwards, its just a matter of when, and we have no clue when that will be other than the certainty that it will happen. This is just plain common sense. Anyone planning on buying, or selling, could do well to take this into account.

For those with no plans to sell: as a few owners have stated here, just enjoy the cars whilst you own them.

It goes without saying that until the day you sell it and put the money in the bank, you haven't made a dime, and in fact its just an expensive hobby! With that in mind, the chatter about values is nothing more than a biased opinion (depending on whether one is a potential seller, or a potential buyer) to be taken with a grain of salt, unless its tied to a specific verifiable sale result.

    Interesting times.

There seem to be a lot of you who don't believe in the CT values. The price increases have been a long time coming and should be seen as '' FINALLY''. Keep the glasses half full and throw away those wet blankets.

Dan, the realists among us have thrown away the rose-colored spectacles! The price increases actually started many years ago, and they are great, but one must keep it all in perspective.

Hello Joe, I wasn't picking on your comment. I was just feeling good about a car that is finally recognized as an all time great by virtue of its value. No way it should trail a 6 cylinder Dino. I probably will never sale mine anyway but I like to think it is up there with the "big boys''

Even with today's market value on the Annivesario, compared to the MSRP in 1989 and indexed for inflation, it is still in the crapper. I think the best appreciation still lies ahead.

It is not we don't believe in the Ct value. It is just that if you look around, indeed all Italian cars have not increased but simply jumped. So it is hard to argue the value spike is a Countach or a lambo affair. I am not familiar with German cars and some here may state what they do in todays context, but I can also tell you that French cars have jumped as well. I am looking for one specifically and out of nowhere the price moved up about 50% on what I am looking for.
The point being here is not to put down the countach per say but to evaluate how much would be a just overdue increase and how much would be foreign cars market hype due to other factors.

The 'investors' who purchased the American Anniversario and sat on it for any significant amount of time were all hosed. Perhaps the immediate on and off flippers did well.

Not sure I agree completely. Did you see the recent issue of the Chinese Classic car show in SCM? There was beautiful looking early (no front bumper guards) 1956 Continental Mark II. Now if you want to talk about a vehicle that would be completely unusable in China and drives like a truck, that is it....

I agree with most of the recent comments here except China. Rich Chinese LOVE to
show off wealth and the weight given to being able to park something rare and
expensive, lets say a countach, in your living room and not even be able to use
it should not be disregarded imo.

I'll remain skeptical on values. In my thoughts the Countach is the super of Supercars. Long term will it increase in value, YES, there's no way it can't. Every minute that goes by enforces its uniqueness and historical value. To state the obvious values will go up AND down, while with every rebound, the car will be that much older, and should rebound higher each time.
I hate to go there, but what makes me so skeptical is how much I feel Obama is continually sabotaging our economy. This Country needs a good solid recovery to see money start flying and have people pay for the appreciation. Granted its a world economy with these cars, but the world seems a little unsettled too.
Maybe it's just me, I HAVE been watching way to much news lately.

    Joe,

I have recently purchased an 89 FI Annivesario with 8K miles and pearl white paint from Canepa Design. He rebuild the suspension and wheels and various other system issues. The car looks and drives fantastic. I am curious as to how you would value your numbers below, compared to what you think they would be today?

For all of you who don't read the silver section I received this letter in the mail today. Good thing I’m having a smog check done :)

“The registration on your model year 1987 Vehicle is expiring soon. Please consider an alternative to driving this vehicle. You can receive $1,000 for your 1994 or older car, van, or pick-up truck from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District) and help reduce air pollution.”

    Oh and don't forget:

“lf within 60 days of a required Smog Check, vehicle must take and pass Smog Check”

Oh wait they didn't get the year right..... Darn :( I could so use a Grand.....to pay for the registration.
