Hey Guys I am a proud owner of a 2000 Ferrari 360 Modena. Its my first Ferrari and the car is unreal. Much better than my old 996 Turbo. Of course buying it used, there are a couple issues the car has if anyone can help me resolve. 1- The F1 trans is awesome, but sometimes theres a delay when its trying to shift from 1 to 2nd gear.... sometimes this delay lasts several seconds before it actually shifts in. 2- At random times there is a car icon on the screen with two arrows pointing at the wheels from the bottom that shows up. Any idea what that is? Thank you for the help in advance
1) That delay is not normal. No insight beyond that. 2) That is the symbol for a fault in the suspension system. I would take it in to a good shop and have them check it out. If you need a copy of the owner's manual, you can download it here. http://www.ferraridatabase.com/index.html Oh, and congrats on the car!
The 360 MANUAL transmission is famous for difficulty shifting from first to second, especially when cold. Some people claim it's because the 2nd gear synchronizer isn't well lubricated, but I don't know that for a fact. How this relates to your F-1 transmission, I'm not sure. Do some searching on this forum for transmission oils. Many people use Red Line, including me. There are a couple of choices including one which Red Line specifically says not to use, but many people use it anyway (I don't). If you decide to change your transmission oil, make sure you don't take the first advice you happen upon. Do your due diligence. An oil change to a Redline product made my first to second shifts much easier. I have no problem when the transmission is fully warm, but it still is a bit tricky sometimes when cold. Holding the shifter to the left helps, shifting slowly helps, or going directly to third is occasionally necessary until the transmission warms up. Then, some days it works just fine right from the start; go figure. Some or all of these symptoms are quite familiar to 360 MANUAL owners. Remember, I'm talking about my manual transmission, but your F-1 system uses the exact same gear box, just a different way of shifting. I have no idea if the "brains" of your F-1 system is smart enough to take it easy when shifting becomes difficult or if it simply does a "speed shift" no matter what. Perhaps some 360 owners with F-1 transmissions will chime in here. The variable damping of your shock absorbers is controlled electronically; when you shift to sport mode for example. When a fault is detected, the light you reference comes on. Unlike some cars, you don't want to run out and buy a new set of shocks for your Ferrari unless you rob a bank first. One technique that helps, or might help, is to find the electrical connector at the shock and clean the contacts. That worked for me soon after I bought my 360. Squirt a little contact cleaner on the contacts and connect/disconnect it a couple of times.
Much better in what way just out of interest? Its not much better in performance as the porsche destroys the ferrari in a race. Its not better in quality either. Its not better in acceleration as again the Porsche is quicker off the mark. Its not better in fuel economy either. It is more prettier then the porsche, it sounds more aggressive then the porsche. The interior is slightly more stylish then the porsche. But it is not much better then the Porsche. Maybe because its your first ferrari you may say this but im very interested how you think it is so much better then Porsche? Neither car is better then the other, they are equally as amazing as each other in there own ways in my opinion. You wont find a car that is much better then the 911 Turbos, they are a performance master piece
Well you can make that argument I suppose. Yes, go ahead and name most any attribute and chances are you can say "The Porsche is better than the Ferrari in that area". And even Ferrari owners who are ex Porsche owners (like me) will have to concede on a long list of various points. However, the Porsche loses out when it comes to the last word which is, "Yeah, but it isn't a Ferrari". Those who have owned both know what I'm talking about.
Thats exactly right but just because its a Ferrari doesnt make it "much" better then the Porsche. I am just very interested in what it is that make it much better then the Porsche. I would have to add that unless it was a Turbo or GT3TRS model then yes, the Ferrari would be a completely different experience then the standard carrera, cayman etc and that would be easier to say it was much better then the Porsche but this guy owned the 996 Twin Turbo, the performance machine that god couldnt even create, they are an astonishing car.
I have an F1 system and in 3 years I never had a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd, either hot or cold. However, when very cold, occasionally the 1st->2nd shift "sounds" a bit rough. On the other hand, neutral to first very occasionally does not happen within a second and the system shifts into 2nd instead. I'm not sure why this is and it never leaves any error codes to diagnose it, and I can't reproduce it "on purpose". I suspect it's linked to my habit of going from high gear to neutral and then coasting to a stop (eg traffic light), but I have no evidence to support this. No other gear changes ever do this. Btw I use Valvoline Durablend GL-5 gear oil.
1. Everybody has a porsche. They make very nice DD. Exotics for lawyers and professionals that don't know cars. "It's a porsche!" 2. For "performance" get a vette. I know a guy who used to spank 996 and 997 tt in his modded z06 if performance is your goal 3. "Stylish" btdt. The 996 turbo has the exact same interior as my old Boxster had. That cheap plastic lets make Porsche more profitable interior. It's nice to have real aluminum in the car. 4. I'm not convinced an unmodded 996 is that much faster than an unmodded Modena above 50mph. 0-60 sure, but above that I'm unsure 5. When you get past the "how fast can I go" and the vette wins this one, its about driving experience isn't it. And for that the 360 wins over the dull porsche experience. Had both, Ferrari wins.
Oh almost forgot.. Vv23, its going to be one of two things that need fixing, a shock actuator (not as likely) or an acceleration sensor. It's commonly the sensor behind the passenger side shield in he engine bay due to heat, or the one under the front bumper, or the one in front of the windshield. About $100-200 for a new part, an SD2 scanner can tell you which one. See: Ferrari 360 Modena Parts : Table 137 - FRONT AND MOTOR COMPARTMENTS ELECTRICAL BOARDS AND SENSOR #1,6 or 15
I agree 100%, but there are intangibles that are just hard to describe. Drive both cars at 5/10ths and I think that many would say the Ferrari is the better car. Drive both at 9/10ths at the track and it would be the opposite. If it were strictly about performance, we would all be driving a GT-R. I think a lot of people who make the transition to Ferrari previously owned a Porsche and a better performing one, yet they still feel the Ferrari is the better car. I think when they say better, they primarily mean more exciting. I had a 997 Turbo previously. Amazing car and I don't think anyone would argue with that. But it was boring with a capital B. Also had a 997.2 GT3 RS. Now that was a car that could hold its own against Ferrari IMO. Looked great, sounded great (aftermarket exhaust), and handled amazingly on the track. Despite that, I'm back to Ferrari, in a car that perhaps doesn't perform as well as the GT3 RS (arguable), but one that I think is a better car. That said, I'm sure I will be back in a Porsche one day. They make some of the best cars in the world.
Well, everyone is entitled to his opinion and you certainly free to have yours. But I would argue that as a matter of fact that just because it's a Ferrari, it IS indeed "much" better than the Porsche.
I'd like to chime in on this one, I have both. I have a 2002 360 Modena and a 2010 997.2 Carrera S. Both cars are fun for various reasons and both cars have limitations. But a Ferrari is a Ferrari. A few weeks ago, we went to the monthly Porsche club meet, my wife drove the Porsche and I met her there in the F-car because I went to Cars n Coffee with a few F-car owners earlier. Funny thing is, all the guys in the Porsche club came over to look at the Ferrari. There were 25+ Porsches there and people who were walking by stopped to talk and take pictures with the Ferrari, not the Porsches. Don't get me wrong, the Porsche is an unbelievably amazing car, but it just doesn't have the panache of a Ferrari .
Congrats on the car! If you did your due diligence when purchasing , the 360's are pretty reliable. I'm on 8 years of 360 ownership and never did more than regular maintenance on both my 360's. I had both the F1 and currently I have a 3 pedal. Both have their attributes and when properly maintained are bullet proof. Welcome to the brotherhood. Enjoy that stallion in good health. As for the anyone trying to bash the 360 by propping up the Porsche sounds like envy to me and they should hang in their respective forums.
Your profile doesn't say much... Do you own a Ferrari? Have you even driven one? I'm curious out of interest as to how you have formulated such an opinion on 360's.
I concur as alot of these opinions given arent from Ferrari owners so no point of reference..probably just another wannabe
Hey Guys Thanks for the input. I'm gonna try and do a transmission flush before digging deeper into the problem... any recommendations on trans fluid? As far as the difference in my old Porsche 996tt vs my current 360...heres my impressions: 1- speed hands down the 996tt is faster..or at least feels faster than the 360. 2- handling I'm not sure. I know the limits of the Porsche, but I have yet to discover what the 360 can do. Having said so, the Porsche is much more stable due to awd. I feel the 360 fish tail a lot, more than my e46 m3. It could also be the tires and power difference. 3 steering is more responsive in the 996tt. Light twiches will jerk the car side to side Where the Ferrari wins is comfort, quality, noise and exhilaration. The 996tt turbo suspension is really stiff for daily driving, it was smoothed out quite a bit for the 997 models. The Ferrari is buttery smooth over the harshest bumps, makes for a much more enjoyable drive. The Porsche interior is all plastic and cheap looking and feeling. No comparison by any means. Noise Ferrari will always win, no contest. Its hard to push a car to its limits on the roads, the Porsche may edge the Ferrari in speed, but the overall experience of driving a Ferrari is more of an event than the 996tt.
Couldn't agree more with your comment about the GT-R. I had one for a brief time after I sold my 360 and everything about the car was impressive, especially when you consider the cost, but I couldn't wait to be back in a Ferrari. Back in a CS now and all is good. For me, it all came down to the fact that in the GT-R it was the odd moment here or there that you were pushing the car and enjoying it whereas the Ferrari is a car where you enjoy every minute. OP, congrats on the purchase and enjoy in good health. To get that stuff resolved, find a good local shop and have them take a look.
It's like having sex with a women, you could have sex with any women but I would only have sex with a beautiful women.
Congrats on the purchase. I have an 04 360 Coupe F1. So far its been a great experience. Get the codes fixed and enjoy !!
