The car, a late 97 355B, has developed some sort of oil leak. I tried looking around and noticed that there was some sort of screw in what I think is the gearbox, that has come loose and raised itself. Not sure what it is or does exactly, but I was wondering if I can drive it to my mechanic, which is about 40 miles from the car, or do I need to get it towed?

I've attached two pictures, one from before and the other with the screw raised as it is now.

    Thanks for your help!

That's exactly it. I sent a picture to my mechanic and he said the same thing. He also told me that it shouldn't be a problem to drive to him. He gave two hypothesis before looking at it: it was either overfilled (he doubts it because he did it) or there might be a drain or breathing hole that has become plugged and needs clearing.

Off it goes for some love.

    Thanks guys!!

I had similar oil from the vent tube of the transmission.

Check your engine oil. If its low, then oil from the engine is getting pumped into the transmission through the leaking rear main seal causing an apparent overfill of the transmission.

Initially, my mechanic doubted my theory but confirmed the diagnosis with dye in the engine oil which made its way into the transmission. Rear main seal was torn. Fixed the RMS and no further problems.

That happens also when your heat exchanger goes bad. The coolant enters thru the heat exchanger into your gearbox, via the braided hoses, raises the level of gear oil to the top and starts squirting out from the vent. I had first hand experience in this myself.

Drain a bit of the gear oil and see what comes out first. Usually oil will go on top and water on the bottom. If you open the gear oil drain plug and water or coolant comes out, you have a bad heat exchanger with a hole in it.

Great bit of advice, thank you very much! I will relay to my mechanic, but hopefully it is just a little excess oil in the gearbox, as it was replaced recently.

Will keep the forum posted on the outcome.

Thanks for commenting. We checked the oil level and despite it being on the low end, it was still within the normal parameters of the dip-stick.
