Here's an image of my VIN pad *03932*. If you look closely it looks to have been originally masked off to expose the bare metal then at some point was painted black.

Here is the chassis number area on my car, before I decided to paint it. Not very attractive, but it should be easy to duplicate. Andres

that`s the late version for 246 GT E-series
very much correct, that somebody painted it black at a later time, original the number should be blank.

Anybody with a lower chassis no. than #03932 and the same late chassis number plate?

    Regards Matthias

    with thanks to Matthias

"actually there are three different chassis no. plates with the Dino 246 GTS. (pictures attached)
The first (early) version was used until approx #04000.
The second from approx. #04000 until #05200.
    The third from approx. #05200.
(US-modells can always differ, because they had most of the time a production delay of 3 to 6 month.....)
For the second and third version the chassis no. was taped, so a paintless frame was original around the number."

Wouldn't the unmasked area rust fairly quickly? Is it common to clear coat the exposed metal to prevent this?
