Poking around I found this vintage picture from the 1986 Chicago Auto Show. That kid is in heaven. :)

That 328 GTB is probably one of the 1986 model year cars.

74609 is being offered for sale by Miller Motorcars and they list it with a brown interior. This is the car seen by Dave at Lime Rock.

Wouldn't it be cool to identify the VIN on this car?

It is certainly possible. I was able to do that with a period picture posted by Tommy C. a while back. The number of cars this could be are under 20.

Actually, maybe even less than 10. The Chicago Auto Show in 1986 was February 8-February 16 which means only the early '86 cars would be able to make the show, short of an air freighted car, which is possible but unlikely IMO.

It's hard to tell from the picture but my initial thought is no, it looks like a standard black dash with a standard material rear shelf.

But, as you noted, 61327 did come through LFSC which makes sense as they likely supplied the cars for the Chicago Auto Show. But I suspect it's not 61327. There are several '86 MY cars on the list that don't have dealer info next to them, which also could have come through LFSC. The search goes on.

BTW, I didn't know you owned 61327. What do you think? Do you think the car in the picture has a brown dash?

Actually, looking a little closer to the list of cars in that range, I'm wondering if the car in the picture isn't 61327.

Does anyone have access to Mattius Urban's registry? I suspect some of the '86 cars on the US 328 GTB registry are not actually 328 GTB but other models from the time, particularly Mondials. But I need to cross check with some other registries out there to confirm.

If that is the case, and those mystery '86 MY cars are indeed not US 328 GTB, then there are not too many cars that would work out other than 61327. :)

I've had it a couple years now.

On the driver's side the dash looks black but in the middle it looks brown. So who knows?

Done: your above-enclosed list of 1986 GTBs cross-checked with Matthias Urban's information and others: all the cars listed as '86 on your list are definitively American Market GTBs...

EXCEPT: 62813, which maybe actually in the United States, that I don't know, but is an Euro model: her VIN is listed as ZFFWA19B000062813, which is the standard euro VIN of a 328 GTB.

All other chassis numbers are listed with their full VIN by Matthias, which allows to ascertain these cars as 328 GTBs (ZFFXA19Betc...) and US market models, this except for five cars, identified as 328 GTBs indeed, but for which there is only the chassis number and not the full VIN: 61411, 61759, 61793, 66511 and 66711.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks for that. It is helpful, even if it increases the number of cars that could be in that photo. Just so I understand, are you saying 61411, 61759, 61793, 66511 and 66711 cannot be confirmed as US 328 GTB because their full VIN's are not on Matthias' site?

    Hi Furmano,

It is not that I doubt these cars being US Market GTBs: Matthias lists these as being US Cars, so they were signaled to him as such; but these are the only five for which he does not have the full VIN, which usually lifts any doubt.
I do believe these five are indeed US cars...

OK, thanks. That info is really helpful. Now all I have to do is track down those mystery cars and find what the original dealer was. I suspect 61327 was not the only '86 328 GTB to pass through Lake Forest Sports Cars in Chicago. But we won't know until those other cars are tracked down.

As an aside, I somehow envy you for being able to work on a list with people that are willing to disclose VIN and Chassis numbers, which is still something owners are reluctant to do here, and also been able to track down the cars through their dealerships...that would also be difficult to do here.
I guess I'll be dead and gone for long when the final, complete list of chassis numbers for the 220 GTBs that were allegedly been registered in France will be complete...not to mention the GTSs (about 350 I guess).

True, true. That's why I'm keeping this list to just US 328 GTB, to keep the numbers manageable. I think this registry will be 90% complete within a few years. And the internet is an incredible tool.

That said, it's fascinating that some of these cars have simply disappeared. Parked in a garage or some back lot, never to be heard from again. It seems the same cars come on to the market again and again over time. But then again, recently some "mystery" cars have come on to the market. Like the Bianco one in Houston, or the Verde one from Santa Monica. The rise in values may shake some cars out of their perpetual storage. :)

Well, I am also frustrated, and fascinated at the same time by the thought that some have been hidden away from our prying eyes, and in very different places: I think about, for instance:

    - 82112, a french '89 GTB that was never registered and spent about 20 years "somewhere" before being offered for sale by "FA Automobiles" in Paris in 2010 with only the delivery miles (190 kms / 120 miles) on the odo.

    - 81995, a french GTS, living her own happy life in rural France with his first original owner for 25 years before being put on the market recently...and been noted by someone for the first time.

Or those who left for some exotic places, cars that we will never know about: suppose there was some rich collector in a South American country (for instance) who ordered one and kept it outside public access...and there must be some!

There is also a video on You-tube about a brunch for 328s owners in Japan; the video is not very interesting, but there are at least 20 cars on the grass, some GTBs among them...that's at least 20 chassis numbers missing, as info from Japan is difficult to obtain.

And of course we have those who have reached the end of their life (accident, exhaustion...) and that we will never know about...
Collecting chassis numbers is a never-ending job...

When I was looking for my GTB I came across an '86 I think that had a Carfax that showed it had been registered in Trona, CA. Trona is a POS town located on a salt flat out in the middle of the eastern CA desert. Why anyone would register a 328 GTB in Trona baffles my mind. There are many cars out there that are just sitting, rotting away.

I think the best way to track down some of these cars is to reconstruct the VIN and run a Carfax on them to at least see where the are generally located.

Hey, maybe LFSC has records of cars that came through their showroom from the 80's. It's worth a shot. I really want to identify the car in that period photo.

I ran Carfax's on the fist unidentified cars. I got the following:

    61013 RC/Beige
Likely originated as a Florida car. Steady stream of registrations over the last five years in Boynton Beach, FL, the last one on 08/26/2013.

    61041 Nov 85
Only one entry, from the first registration, on 2/20/1986 in New Jersey. Never to be heard from again.

    61141
Likely started as a New York car. Last registration in Highlands, North Carolina. No idea of the color.

    61181 RC/Nero
Likely started as a Southern California car. Last registered in Rio Vista on 04/19/2013 with over 70,000 miles. Nero interior disqualifies it as the Chicago show car.

    61239 RC/Beige Nov 85
    Didn't run report.

    61243 Nov 85
Earliest entry in 2002 in Colorado. Last entry on 10/31/2003 in Edgewater, FL. Color information would help narrow down whether this car could have been the Chicago show car.

61327 RC/Beige Dec 85 LFSC leather rear shelf, brown dash
The fact that the original dealer for this car was LFSC leads me to think it is the Chicago show car. However more VIN's will need to be run to be sure.

Maybe. 61041 could have been a demo car. But I suspect the car shown at the show was a real deal, production model that was later sold.

I wonder if Tim Stanford has seen any 328 GTB come through his shop lately.
