I'm looking at a 1998 GTB manual near me, red over black, presents very well. The owner is asking high 60s. About 20k miles, mostly stock except for a Tubi exhaust and headers. (I assume the cats are gone?) The 15000 mile service was done at 14000, so about 5000 miles ago. Belts obviously done at that time, and the clutch was replaced too.

Valve guides never done apparently, but I assume we'd know by now if the guides are crap. Owner says he had the cam covers refinished, not sure why.

So, she needs a major and what else? Anything else I should be asking? I don't want to low ball him, but I don't want to overpay in this market.

    - Tubi and headers have no bearing on CATs, don't assume they are gone.
    - Compression test can help understand if you have valve guide issues
    - It's fairly comment to refinish cam covers during a major
    - What else? We don't have nearly enough information from you to anser that question.

Thanks, Dave. I guess that was a noob question. I'm just wondering if there is anything that commonly needs attention on 355 that I should ask whether its been done.

Sounds an awful lot like a car in Maine that I was considering except that was red and tan.

That river is wide and deep...

Have Dave send you his pre purchase stuff. Add PIN verification to it. I'll add check that all sensors and probes are connected and check the obd for pending codes, then start it and let it get good and warm and then drive it for 20 or so miles and see if you get sdl or cel.

I could go on and on but then you might not ever buy one but you will be informed.

From what I've seen, it would be a good price if it had valve guides done (or confirmed no issues) and a recent major. Otherwise, a few bucks too much. But that's just my opinion.

Some real positives it sounds like, Tubi Headers are an expensive upgrade, I have mine since 2007, very happy with them. Resale red is great, GTB is great, standard 6 speed is great, definitely get a PPI, but if the car checks out the price is not that far out of line. Don't worry about repainted cam covers, almost all have had them repainted by now. Good luck, hope it checks out for you.

98 F355 should not need valve guides Factory made a change to sentered steel in the middle of 97 you can check by the engine number you could also have a leakdown test. Dont be affarid there really geat cars. Six speed wouldnt have it any other way.

The valve guide change actually occurred around the end of calendar year 1997, so a model year 98 is still suspect if it was built in 97. Determination is by assembly number (27689 and up have sintered steel). Agree that a leakdown test is advisable regardless.

you also need the spring cups when this repair is done on an early engine.

So check the engine number and buy the car.

I'm afraid you gave that car away. I think the fact that it sold in just 2 days supports that.

I did not want to sit on it. Maybe I could have squeezed another few thousand. It may have taken longer to sell. A lot of these cars just seem to be on the market for a long time. I thought the time to sell was now. I moved on.

I agree. I price my cars to sell as well.

The car in Maine is overpriced in my opinion. I would say mid 60's maybe. The fact that poor pictures were taken is not a plus. Other than that, I don't personally know anything about the car.

The 97/98 valve guide information is very interesting. Where do I find the engine number on my 98 GTS?

Not to sure about that 97/98 valve guide correction. Mine is a 98 built Sept of 97 and needed to do the guides on my last belt service two yrs ago.

Buried under the oil filter. Doubt you can read it without removing the oil filter housing. It's also printed on the warranty card if you have it. Why not reference the assembly number instead which is in plain view?

The service bulletin is dated December 22, 1997, so yours was likely built before the changeover. But determination is by assembly number, not date. I bet yours is below 27689.

Just found engine number on warranty card. Looks like I'm alright (49,1xx). Still very interested to know where to locate the assembly number?

In the engine compartment where the left damper is mounted.
