No there is not an easy way to determine due to the timing covers hide everything. You'll also want to look at the bearings.

Whats the reason you'd like to test one without removing the engine?

    Thanks Jon

Just getting my ducks in a row here. Engine is coming out next week. Wanted to see if anyone had a correct test method before I drop them back in.

Had the same question, but my engine is out at the moment, so the tensioners are sitting on my desk. Is there any way to test the hydraulic tensioner to see if it is good (ie: not siezed)? I did measure the protrusion length, and it is 8.3mm on the left and 8.4mm on the right, which is a good sign, but I would imagine that there should be a couple protrusion length vs. temperature points to verify it is within spec. Has anyone ever checked this? Can't find any mention of it in the WSM.
    Thanks
