Last week took the car out and after a while decided it put it in Auto mode ... Having done so I had to over take a couple of cars on an A road so punched the throttle (not to the floor but a good way down) and was surprised that it didn't react very quickly at all ... Should I have clipped the down flappy paddle a couple of times to get a swifter response ... Or is anyone else surprised at 50mph that it didn't zip up to 70+ mph faster in auto alone ?

I usually hit the paddle to accomplish passes and the car now goes to manual mode. However, if you are driving on a highway for any length of time you can go to 7th and relax and only hit the paddle if needing some torque. Best

Which mode was it in? I would suspect it was in sport rather than race.

Yes it was in sport ... So race would have meant it was more responsive in Auto would it then ?

In auto in race or sport is not as quick as my previous 991 4s pdk. For example I could be in 7th And floor it and it would shift to 2nd gear. The 458 would go to 4th. I think they have designed the software that way as the manual mode in the 458 is a different level and they want you to use the paddles

'Auto mode' is quite an intelligent feature.

The gearbox's processor analyzes the way the driver
uses the car by memorizing his throttle usage.

    So, if you're the 'pusher-type' ;) it'll react quicker
once it has experienced a couple of hard pushs to the
throttle meaning it'll shift down one, two or even
more gears at once to give the desired power to you.

Give it a try; it'll adapt to your personal rhythm
of throttle usage. You might notice that the time the
auto stays in the selected lower gear and then moves
back up will also change (stays longer in the lower
gears). This is also dependant on manettino-setting,
    of course.

BTW, this goes for a lot of cars of today as modern
autogearboxes have really advanced quite a bit.

    Best,
    Ulli

So if you purchased a previously owned 458, should you 'clear the memory', so it can learn your own driving habits? And if so, what is the process, and will this clear everything (except for Odometer)?

not a subject matter expert, but working with the engineers, they explained it so the computer samples/senses your driving habits/style and reprograms the trans accordingly to better suit your needs i.e. shift points and shift speed
if the car is in the ownership of a new driver, eventually it will sense the different driving style & make adjustments
