LMAO. Hey at least we have a thrilling championship battle and some close competition to take our minds off of it.... Wait...
It seems that they´ve come with something ridiculous so now fans say: oh, well, don´t change anything, we´ll settle for the lesser evil.
If car manufacturers can adjust the sound of the cars (with and without turbo) how come it can't be done on F1 cars?
Why not have them race at the same time, 2 championships like in the 1980s for the Turbo and normally aspirated? As fans we would get to see the top drivers and have better looking and sounding cars racing each other? It would give more drivers the ability to compete in Formula 1. The current status of Formula 1 is becoming a joke. I would be surprised if anyone other than Hamilton and Rosberg win a race this year and it is so expensive that we could lose up to 3 teams before year end. The biggest excitement now is who is going to make it to the end of the season, not who is going to be champion.
Just shows how much of progress F1 has made over the last 10 years, when a bunch of monkeys are running the show. 10 years ago, F1 were indeed pinnacle of motorsports. The best, the fittest guys drove 900+ hp machines, beautiful machines. Now, they're ugly, muted, fake, and just so turning off, IMO. Those days, i remember the period between 1999-2006, when i missed only 1 live race...the 2006 French GP. Now, i don't even care anymore that i miss a race. Pathetic!
They'll just pump the sound in through the track PA system (joking). Not much different than what BMW and Porsche already do on some of their road cars. I honestly found the Indy Car race on the road course last weekend (Grand Prix of Indianapolis) more entertaining than the F1 race by a very large margin. This may really be a problem for tracks like the one here in Austin. When IRL looks and sounds substantially better than F1, something is really wrong.

Maybe some thumping sub woofers. With all those batteries, they could drive a mean amp. And who says F1 was artificial
While I now admit that the sound is not acceptable I do not have an issue with most of the current engine regulations. I like the electric motor helping accelerate the car and the same concept to accelerate the turbo. I do not like the restrictive part of the rules. If you restrict the rules too much that extra gain in performance over your opposition costs a lot more to find. If they want to save costs they need to relax the rules, ie. engine size is 1.6 litres and has to be turbo charged and have KERS ... otherwise do as you like. BUT the main reason I'm posting this is because if you read the history books the most competitive time and also the time when the sport advanced the most was in the 1.5 litre days (1961 to 1965). The racing was extremely close (think slip streaming), we finally moved completely to mid-engined and monocoques, aero efficiency (frontal area etc) become even more important and such things as double wishbone suspension with inboard spring units became the norm. Without this change I wonder if we would still be racing front engined cars? So my point, who knows where this hybrid part of the current rules will lead us BUT yes FIA has to relax the restrictive nature of the rules immediately. It does not save cost Pete
IMO they need to relax the fuel flow limits and fuel amounts, maybe bring back refuelling. Was it really that dangerous?, I only remember a few incidents of problems with refuelling, while it spiced things up and gave us extra strategy options. The higher fuel flows and limits would allow the teams to rev the engines higher and this will increase the noise (although whether it will just be a slightly louder version of the flatulence they sound like now I don't know), and if teams don't want to refuel, they wouldn't have too. Putting a funnel on the end of the exhaust is just ridiculous
No but it means passing no longer happens as they use the pit stop instead of doing it for real Agree Pete
There are still tire stops so "fake" passes aren't eliminated. At the time didn't they claim that eliminating refueling was a cost cutting measure?
A friend of mine reminded me of this video from a few years back after seeing the megaphone exhaust. I nearly fell out of my chair in laughter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZD-ADArwXo They all need Whistle Tips!
I have no problem with at least some passing being done in the pits TBH. Good strategy has generally been a part of F1. And yes, hauling three fuel rigs per team around the world doesn't come cheap.... Apparently they eliminated one 747 flight on the flyaways. Now, as Bernie has noted in his inimitable fashion, Merc take *22* huge trucks to every (non flyaway obviously) race!.... I'd guess those things use more fuel etc trundling round Europe than the race cars. Motor homes used to be just that - A Winnebago and an awning with a few tables. The huge 'hospitality centers' they're now using probably account for more than most teams entire budgets not that many years ago. And they're all excluded from any 'cost cutting' proposals. Cheers, Ian
Fair point Ian..seriously. However I think Mclaren have cut back a bit.. Image Unavailable, Please Login
As you know the one account that still has an unrestricted budget is "entertainment" or keeping the sponsors happy. If the cost cutting actually had the desired effect I might see the point, but as it is the rich still win, the poor are no more viable and the sport is emasculated.
The only passing on track is artificial anyway as it requires differences in tyre type and/or age, so why not bring back refuelling? Least we get the fastest cars at the best breakneck speeds they can muster without having to fuel save around at 2/3 seconds off the pace
Agreed, but I watch F1 to see great racing not great lapping. Any idiot can lap quickly but it takes a real racing driver to "race" well. For those that like watching cars lap quickly and awesome pit stops, why not have each car run their laps separately and the winner is the one who completes their laps fastest ... er, no that's right it is supposed to be a RACE that involves driver race craft and challenges on the track.
