Colour discrimination and selection can be tricky. As an amateur painter I have to constantly mix and match paints to exactly duplicate what's already on the canvas or recreate real or imagined objects. IMO, cuoio and beige leathers are not actually different gradations of the same colour. They each appear to have what painters call, a different colour bias. Cuoio has a reddish-umber bias and beige has a yellowish bias. When colours are placed alongside each other they form a sort of natural palette of that object. While our eyes may not be trained and may not consciously pick it up, our subconscious minds often will notice whether a particular colour palette "works" (or not) even if we can't consciously explain why. IMO, the usual reason for why we like a certain palette is because it reminds us of something we are familiar with and that we like. When a palette is unfamiliar, the usual reason for our positive response is because it elicits strong mental or emotional reactions as our minds try to make sense of it. These differences may explain why appreciation for classic themes differ from those for radical novel themes. There are hazards to both approaches. Classic themes can get boring due to their familiarity while radical themes can become tiresome due to the over-stimulation. I think these explanations may help people understand subtle differences in colour, how they influence our subjective colour preferences and how to consciously make selections. Yes, "mandatory options" is indeed a ridiculous concept. I'm wondering why Ferrari did it because I'm sure they realize their contradiction in terms. One guess is that Ferrari feels it does not have enough experience with current turbochargers and wants to avoid potentially nasty accidents. Turbochargers have been known to cause engine compartment fires. Failures of turbo components can rupture their housing, spraying out flammable coolant onto very hot surfaces. While many cars already use turbochargers, Ferrari may simply be exercising extra caution especially with the engine compartment fires in the early 458s. I think it's a good idea and I've always carried a small fire extinguisher in my vehicles. As for the spare wheel, I wonder if it has implications regarding roadside assistance. What if you're making a trip to your cottage somewhere in the boonies and your tire lets go late in the day with no roadside support reaching you before the sun sets? The use of Fcars as DDs may be making this consideration more important.
Thank you all for the valuable feedback. Taking into consideration your thoughts as well as my own "desires" I managed to finalize the order. However, as per previous experience ordering a few Porsche, one can never be 100% satisfied and there are always some doubts about the selection of options/colors. It's not about good or bad but what's good and what could look better. So here it is: Exterior: Rosso Scuderia Calipers: Rosso Scuderia Interior: Cuoio - Dash and door upper part: Nero (standard) - Center arm rest / tunnel: Cuoio (standard) - Steering in Cuoio - Carpet in Nero (standard) - LEDS Steering Carbon Fiber - Reverse Camera - 20" Diamond Sport - Shields - Full Electric Standard Seats (standard) - Car Play (standard) - Cruise Control (standard) - Auto dimming interior & exterior mirrors (standard) - Rev counter in yellow I was going to order "Backbone" style seats as I wanted a flat seat surface. However, there was no way to try them out and this $4k decision was solely based on how seats looked on the configurator. There would be a risk they wouldn't be in reality as they seem in the configurator. However, after looking closely at the launch pictures of the standard full electric seats, it didn't seem to be as hard or uneven as the old Daytona so I am hoping the new standard seats will be comfortable. It seems the Backbone is a new seat style as Googling it didn't give much results.
also, i am thrilled to see that Car Play is available on the launch ! your specs are great, i was looking at the pics and also feel the standard electric seats will be great.
Unfortunately their configurator is no up on the public site yet. I had to make so many trips to the showroom. As I would contemplate a particular option or color, I wouldn't be able to view/evaluate it on my own - a showroom visit was required. By the way, as much as I love Ferrari, I'm surprised their configurator is dull and lousy. Having owned a few Porsche before, their configurator is the best with clear written description & price of every option and the graphics are relatively life like.
I agree, the configurator is crap. Colors are not like in real life and even the model doesn't look representative. Not Ferrari worthy...
Very nice configuration! Yes, there are some parts of the Ferrari experience that are a little bit strange, but you know the key is in how the cars drive. Michael great thoughts also on the colors and fire extinguisher etc. I agree with you and I keep a small glove box fire extinguisher handy. I just think having it down in the passenger footwell just takes up space from your passenger and if you see smoke/ flames, I think the best policy is to stop the car and get out and put as much distance between it and you as possible.
The dark brown interior like Cuoio looks about twice as expensive as Beige in person, why, I don't know. Possibly because light tan leather is common in almost every car nowadays. The darker colors look a lot more natural and 'rich' in every sense of the word. You can't go wrong with red but RS is a really loud color, so I would suggest sticking with red calipers vs yellow or else there will be yellow calipers/shields/wheelcaps and all of a sudden you're bordering a McDs ad. Yellow tach is a great addition, as is rear camera.
Good choices below ... My FF has a Cuoio steering wheel and although very good looking the leather is thicker and not perforated like a black wheel, making pressing the horn buttons much more difficult. My next Ferrari may have a black wheel just because of the horn buttons. The FF has my first white tach. A friend of mine drove my FF (finally) the other day and really liked the white vs. the other colors. I have had two Cali's with yellow and I will order white from now on. White is MUCH easier to read. Your car should be beautiful! Rick
RS can appear very bright in some situations. It's best to see an actual California with RS but I found these cars with RS body colours on the Web. The first 2 are definitely RS, the 3rd one with the black calipers is probably RS. The 4th car shows the exact colour scheme you want: RS + RS calipers and cuoio interior. The car, a 2011, is being advertised for sale here. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks RickLederman, 4th gear and Stefan_009 I searched and searched for the desired exterior and interior combinations. In the end I found a California in RS with RS calipers (I think it was for sale but I didn't save the link) and I thought the RS calipers would be better as yellow may lead into the McDs territory as Stefan_009 pointed out I also found pics of Cuoio steering with Nero dash, but on a FF. However it was enough to give a general idea. Also because I've ordered a CF steering I thought I can get away with Cuoio as half the steering will be black anyways by virtue of being CF. I did consider the white tach very seriously but I wanted some element of yellow and since I walked away from yellow calipers, I wanted to choose something else in yellow - so it had to be the tach. Not sure if it makes sense but that's how I justified it to myself. I am encouraged by the positive feedback on this forum and hoping the car will turn out well
Maybe you missed the link I posted earlier but it pointed to a car with most of your options minus the yellow tach, cuoio armrest/console. If they are not already included I would also add the billet aluminium foot rest options for the driver and passenger. BTW, I understand your reason for the yellow tach - yellow is one of the primary Ferrari colours
I think it sounds beautiful. I would recommend you rethink the cameras. They will be mandatory soon anyway and are not too expensive.
Sounds like a great color combo! My 599 is RS with beige interior, black mats and red calipers. Looks fantastic, my favorite combo. I would change to black floormats though if it was my order.
I asked about this and was informed that carbon shields can be added after the car arrives by the dealership but not from factory. However you still have to order the yellow shields in order to have the proper space for shields.
Ha! So you can have TWO shields! (well actually four). That is actually preferable to me, so I can figure out if I really do love the carbon more... See 'ya, John
Apparently the suspension setting button is not standard as was originally informed by my dealer. Hence, I have reluctantly cancelled my order. I have not yet reordered as I will wait for the first cars to arrive next month (including my now ex-order) to try out the standard seats and then decide accordingly. I am also now reading on here that CarPlay will not be on the initial cars but my dealer had said it would be. In short, it is safer to wait for now.
